Plus the lack of counterintelligence before the postwar era allowed Soviet agents to worm into high places in the State Department and the Department of the Treasury....

However, McCarthy was a shameless thug who deserves his infamy

Maybe, but the difference between Soviet Agents and Communists is what people often miss.

And now my Mets will have to flee somewhere in search of peace, hope & tranquility. They're really very nice people, though they don't hit so well. Do you think Salt lake City (THIS IS THE PLACE!) will want them?

Somehow I doubt that the cool team in NY is going to move because of one sucky year.

Fond of social security? Harry ends it. If you are over 50 and need the money you get a payoff. Under 50? Well, you don't have to pay the tax anymore.

One-time pay off of all people over 50, with means testing

The government should buy from a private insurance company an annuity for everyone who depends on Social Security. The annuities should provide lifetime incomes similar to what Social Security has promised. I estimate the cost to be roughly $5 trillion.
Annuities should be provided only for those who truly need them. This means some kind of simple, non-intrusive means test must be applied to each retiree. Those that don’t rely on Social Security shouldn’t aggravate the problem further. The maximum monthly Social Security benefit is $1,100; there are many retired people to whom that isn’t a critical amount.
People over the age of 50 who are nearing retirement and who have made plans based on receiving Social Security should also receive annuities. Those annuities would be smaller and wouldn’t begin paying out until age 65.
And what about those under 50? To them we offer the greatest gift possible: You will never again have to pay the 15% Social Security tax.

No, Miles....

Just feelin' defensive, knowing that the righties are massing to crush me: Spartacus on that final hill, watching W/D and Miles set up, flanked by RamblingMan (who's mostly observing, sniping both sides). What will I do when Todd clues in? Markov with the dysfunctional homemade grenades? And - O God - Uncle Bill!

I was, however, touched by your statement that you didn't want to pick my "thoughts" apart.... I appreciate your emotional, if not political, sympathy.

that distinction was a fatal miscalculation in our foreign affairs at times, too

No doubt.

I still think the "shame on you" clip is my fave thing ever on film.

I guess you've never heard tell of any insurance companies whose finances tanked and they couldn't pony up on those annuities, have you?

I must say, the faith that you guys display in corporate America astounds me! I say, piss on the government, the corporations, and on individual assholes. I'm an equal-opportunity crank.

The 50s - one of my French cousins ate Viet Cong liver at DienBienPhu, but it couldn;t have been as much fun as he says. Black folks weren't so happy then, either, but that's not an issue for you guys....

not lining up to crush anyone...just making observations and points.

I don't think Harry Brown has all the answers...it's a huge leap....the problem with dramatically reducing the budget is that the industrial revolution created the problems that made government have to expand. People who used to work the land were lured to the cities to work the factories, but then were left behind when the manufacturing neded less workers or went elsewhere. We cannot deindustrialize, nor can we reduce our population significantly....now Canada could possibly do it if a lot more people expressed an interest in resuming the life of a farmer.

Some libertarianism is needed, but you can't wish away government back to its Constitutional requirements...

Sorry, Tabby -

That was a cheap-ass Manhattan shot at your state. But don't your busybody legislators drive you crazy? Nowumsain?

shadow

That was my dogs name by the way. :D

Yes. But what I find even more annoying than seatbelts, bike helmets, and cell phone restrictions is the Pineland Commission. Talk about busybodies. They piss me off big time.
