SFO's answer to Westboro baptist Church

Fred Phelps is going to be surprised, one way or another, when he meets his Maker.

I have to make my own "I was promised donuts" sign now :D

And another "Pull My Finger"

Reality check...

Let me get this straight (pun intended, well, not really), the Westboro types picketed an appliance store because the store sold vacuum cleaners made in Sweden. Swedish authorities had prosecuted Ake Green, a local pastor who is openly critical of homosexuality. My guess is that Sweden has anti-hate laws. The Westboro types felt that a store selling Swedish products was thus supporting gays.

Well, you have to give the Westboro types credit. If we allow stores to sell products made in Sweden, the next thing will be young people holding hands, and we all know that that leads to spitting on sidewalks.

Unfortunately, I know the Phelps. I've taught some of the grandkids. Really.

Their base of operations is located not too many miles from where we live.

They are wickedly brilliant with a solid knowledge of the law, and in fact, many are practicing attorneys in their law office.

They spout hate messages with a smile. With a - pitying, condescending smile. Or sometimes with a sneer.

They are so absolutely certain of their correctness they can shout down any argument en masse. They can quote the Bible passage for passage, with the Rev's own warped interpretation. They bring the children up into the fold from birth, and it is not uncommon to see 5-year-olds on the street corner holding one of their despicable signs.

They have a special hatred for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Jerks.

But - and here is the thing many people don't understand - the ONLY reason they picket seemingly innocuous places is for the press. They are publicity and media whores. THAT is what they do. THAT is how they get their message out.

So it is common to see them picketing Sesame Street Live on Ice, for example, or the youth theater's latest production of Taming of the Shrew.

They picket funerals of soldiers, which is so disgusting I can't even describe it properly. They also take offenses at churches or businesses in their town of Topeka and occasionally set up shop outside those places. They picketed the high school graduation ceremony that one of their flock attended for some reason, and then put away their signs and went on in to watch him get his diploma.

No rhyme, no reason. Just want the cameras.

I absolute LOVE the answering signs. Perhaps that is the answer, after all.

:)

It's the perfect answer, actually. First, it takes away the cameras from them. They don't get even negative publicity. Second, their signs become lost amid the signs, and come to be seen as just as meaningless--very post modern thinking there! Third, it means everyone else is addressing them with condescending smiles. They are being laughed at and not taken seriously, not even as a threat.

The air is let out of their balloon, all their power gone.

Hey 3, if any of those a$$holes make it this far south, what say we build up a whole set of signs and hand them out to any interested bystanders? This could be a hoot!
Deal!

I confess, I did check their website to see if any of their protests lined up with my travel plans in the next month or so. Looks like they have Telluride, Co, Dallas, Tx and Clarksville, Tn up in the next few months. Rats! ;)

Deal!

It is brilliant. And fun.

And don't forget the doughnuts.

Forgive me please, but my knowledge of the Phelps mob is slim.
What is it they are trying to advertise ?

They are as homophobic as they can get away with under the law. Any more hostility and they would be violent and locked up. And just to be sure everyone understands the theological implications here, Papa Phelps is a self-ordained preacher. He has no seminary credentials, just a gut full of bile and an overload of hatred. Lisa and Rob are right. When the light is shut out on that boy, he's in for one 'Hell' of a shock.

p.s. None of them read Greek, either.

I honestly couldn't tell you.

Here's their Wiki article. It's fairly accurate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Phelps

And here's their website. It's quite horrifying.

http://www.godhatesfags.com/

Their website was going on snail speed in loading, so I went to the Wiki...

Phelps says that he believes that homosexuality and social acceptance of it have doomed most of the world to eternal damnation. The WBC has 71 confirmed members, 60 of whom are related to Phelps.

Eeeeecccch. 'Nuff said.

As a Canuck, I'm unfamiliar with the finer points of law in the USA. The Westboro types wouldn't stand a chance in Canada because of Human Rights legislation which prohibits discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin etc. The willful promotion of hate against anyone or group of people based on such is also illegal.

It's a fine line that has to be drawn between freedom of expression and the protection of human rights. In Canada, legislators have drawn the line. This doesn't always quiet the haters but it does allow for the prescription of jail time to silence them for a while. It also tends to drive them underground which at least keeps them off the streets. And yes, the lawyers never give up challenging the laws, but so far, they have stuck.

As for this "church" filling the heads of their children with this drivel, in Canada, on rare occasions, the law has stepped in and removed children from their homes, based on child protection laws. Recently in Canada, a white supremacist type mother sent her daughter to school with a Nazi swastika inked on the child's body. She was arrested tout de suit and she only got her daughter back under court ordered conditions.

It seems that in the USA, that fine line might need a little adjustment. How the authorities could allow these cretins to picket a funeral is beyond me.

Thanks for the pointers, folks.
I guess the BBC programme was right "the most hated family in America".

What sign?

What sign would you carry?

Some of my suggestions:

This is a sign.

I've seen a sign.

Sign here.

In Hoc Signo Vinco.

I think I'm a long-dead King.

Always scribble, scribble, scribble, eh, Mr. Gibbon?

Don't write a word. Write 50,000 with NaNoWriMo.

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.
