Argh! Can anyone suggest good music for playing in the background as you write? I made a playlist for myself, but discovered that was bad plan, as about a quarter of the songs make me miss me ex girlfriend, and another quarter make me miss the guy I met her through, who is an ex-lover. And I can't be with either of them, they're getting married. To each other; isn't my life normal? :)

Anyhow, any suggested sexy music? Lords of Acid won't do, makes me think of him.

Classical or torch songs work for me. If I play the more fun stuff I get distracted singing along.

Sorry about the ex-lover thing, it wasn't meant to be maybe, there is probablly someone out there waiting to meet you.

Thanks. :) I'm afraid I gave the wrong impression though (I'm good at that). I have a boyfriend of three years; I'm just polyamorous, and still love and desire both of those other partners. Even if I didn't still love them, the music simply makes me think of our time together, and is too distracting to write by.

What are torch songs, by the way?

Old love songs from some of the finest diva's, from the forties and so on, Sarah Vaughn, Etta James, Peggy Lee, try some Harry Connick jr. sets a nice mood.

Torch songs are love odes set to music by the KKK.

I guess it depends on the person, as to what music is sexy or not. I prefer music with a bit of an edge, and a certain sound that I find sexy. I know many might not agree, but I love music by:

- Garbage (Milk, especially)
- Enigma
- Poe
- Sade
- Evanesence (sort of dark, but has potential)

:each of these has a distinct vocalist and include quite a bit more music than lyrics. It's the music that gets me going most, but sometimes the lyrics stir me up too. :D

Anyway, if none of this is your speed then there's always Barry White. ;)

I never listen to music when I write.

If I'm struggling with it I find the music distracts me.

And if the Muse is upon me I won't even notice the Apocalypse.

usually a love song works for me when I write a love scene or even a romantic one without the sex...

Writing swampland brochures and other marketing sXXX materials, I used to share an office with a music lover whose who liked to d.j. the work day. He's a designer, and they apparently don't need the Scrabble/Boggle/dirty stories lobe of their brains to color inside the lines, choose unreadable fonts, etc. I was nice about the disruption through most of his ABBA phase, but when he decided that anything kitschy from the 70's/80's was worth hearing including Muskrat Love by the Captain & Tennille, I punished him by proclaiming Neil Young Day and threatening to disorganize his cds, which were arranged by spine color, if he came near the stereo.

I can write about swampland and have instrumental music on in the background, but nothing with lyrics. If I really like the music - or really dislike it, or can't decide - instrumentals are distracting too.

Words are easily frightened, and jealous. They leave a porous skull at the first sign of competition.

Designers. How easy is that job? Just learn some software, pick a favorite color...

:D

Thanks for the thought everyone.

On the subject of non-lyrical music being preferable; I find this can be true at times, but partly I write in spurts so lyrics can help. Sometimes it's not even music to listen to while I write so much as to get me into the right mindset for that character. For example, right now I'm writing a story that's got a very dominant female character, and a lot of focus on the male character's ass. So it helps to listen to a few things that get me in that "I'm a dominatrix and I adore you butt" frame of mind. Sometimes the mood just won't come, sure... but other times I really want to write but can't get into the groove of it, and find that tactic can be a good way to get going.

Anyhow, just my perspective on the whole "music as writing inspiration" subject in general.

I tend to listen to Texas-style blues, like Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Kenny Wayne Shepherd, very sexy, down-and-dirty music.....oh, wait, I listen to them ALL the time.....

Oh well, just a thought!
