Just an observation.

Normally, you'd think that sex is a requirement, for a sex story. But I don't think it is anymore.

And I think that's a great thing.

I've seen a few extremely popular incest stories (lots of views & votes) that feature no sex. Just the female character sitting on the guys lap, and masturbation. Oral sex for good measure.

There was also a recently acclaimed exhibitionist story which featured female masturbation as the main climax of the story.

Recently, I had written two stories with no sex. Just a guy masturbating a female, and oral sex.

For all the votes and comments those stories have received, no one complained about the lack of sexual intercourse.

Personally, I think it's a great thing because authors don't always have to write long drawn out intercourse scenes, which can often get repetitive. As long as the story has enough erotic parts, especially towards the main climax of the story, then it's good.

Also, personally, I usually don't find the intercourse to be the hottest part of the story. I usually prefer the foreplay, oral sex, or the person making the female character orgasm by other means.

Of course there are audiences for everything, there are people who will be upset without sex, but as you said there is a good sized faction that enjoy a build up more than the actual fucking and when its done right a blow job or masturbation can be even hotter.

Yep, I believe that "erotica" can be found in the pursuit, even if the final act isn't spelled out. I've written a couple in that vein and they seem to do as well as the more explicit stuff.

I'd say that it depends on the story. For me, if the story has a heavy romantic lean and there's only implied sex, there a good chance that I'll still walk away a happy reader. On the other hand though, if the story is about a couple going to a swingers club, then I'll probably be unsatisfied if implied sex is all that happens.

I ended the first book (twenty chapters ~ 158k words) of my 'Pizza Boy' trilogy with nothing more than cuddling and frottage. Evidently the readers didn't seem to mind since they vaulted it into the HOF.

There are so many ways to write erotically without limiting yourself to "Insert tab A into slot B." Remember: the best sex occurs between the ears.
