Hits, views, reads just means that someone has opened your story. They may have clicked back right away or read your story to the end.

Votes on the other hand mean someone finished the story and took time out of their day to click on one of those stars at the end.

And then there are comments, most comments let you know how your story was received. There some though that you can ignore, those would be the mean, vindictive ones that a person called Anonymous leaves. (Check the Whose this Anonymous Person thread)

No it doesn't. It just means they went to the bottom and hit the vote button. As far as I can see a lot of votes are just knee jerk "don't like/love that poster"/"don't like/love that category" zappers.

I would think the only people who vote without reading are trolls, or people who are either alts or people the author knows. hardcore fans who always vote 5's will read it. This author is new so don;t think they would have many of those. So I agree that votes are at least a better indication than views. No one will ever know how many actual reads you get because for some reason I am yet to fathom, there are people who will invest the time to read a story and not take the additional seconds to vote.

Oh you mean little Killjoy! Of course hits don't mean reads but did you have to burst there bubble? Sadist. Even though you are of course correct I will say it is still very exciting when you first start to see that many hits. (91,000 why am I thinking incest?) My wife has a motivational speaking/life coaching business. she is constantly pissed because her website gets a few hundred hits a month and my incest stories get thousands of hits. shows where society is these days she says. i say it's a different kind of motivation!

I have no doubt half the votes in a contest are both trolls/fans but in an evryday story I am not sure about "what the hell" 5 votes without reading.

Still feel good about them there are stories and authors that don;t get that many hits and if you got that many than it means a fair amount of people read it. It's still proportionate so more read yours than a story with 10,000 hits.

The title makes a real difference to the number of hits. My highest viewed story is titled "Virgin's Sister" - with 286,000 views. The title is probably the best thing about the story, so I shamelessly repeated it with "Virgin's Sister Again".

If it's not broke don't fix it. I'm a bit of a numbers nut and so far it appears that in general incest will get the most views (in general a well known author will get a lot of hits regardless) and within incest Mother/son is top draw. Any title with Mom or Mother is good for 60,000 hits within it's first couple of days. I did one Mother son. Mom was not in the title (Weekends with Laura) But the oh so clever Tagline was "Kevin has a thing for older women; even his mom" 65,000+ hits that day.
