I entered a local literary competition last month. You could enter 3 short stories each under 2500 words.

I wrote two stories but was stuck for the third possible entry so I took one of my Literotica submissions and rewrote it without the sex.

I received a letter this morning. The de-sexed Lit story is in the final six.

I am not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Congrats, Og
But I have a question that has bothered me for some time. Does this mean that the sex scenes in erotic literature are gratuitous and included only for the wankers? I've read so many stories on Lit where deleting the sex scenes does nothing to add to or detract from the story.

Jenny. Jenny, Jenny. We did this months back and the conclusion was that Og's stories are stories with sex, not sex stories and yes he is wasting his time here.

If, on the other hand, I deleted the sex from my 'vignettes' there would be only punctuation left and plenty of parentheses.

To answer your question seriously. It's true that there are a great many stories on Lit that can 'live' without the sex. There is even a section for non-sex stories.

You'll find lots of writers on the boards are far more concerned with their style, growth and even 'worth' than they are in actual sex scenes. this is after all Literotica.

Some of us just write stuff to wank to.

Gauche

Edited to add. Vincent makes the point much better next. Simultaneity. Don't you just love it?

If you are a good writer, then you are a good writer. If the genre is sci-fi, mystery, or erotica a good writer will capture the imagination of the reader.

The great American story telling genre is the western, whether in movies or books. Consider the best of the westerns: High Noon, The Searchers, Unforgiven. If the story is told in any other setting the general plot is till just as interesting. The story that revolves around characters carefully crafted by an author can be placed in any time or place.

At this website we focus mainly on erotica. Some story are strokers others are dramas. The story that can remove the sex, as in Og's case, and still retain the plot and interesting characters puts the "Lit" in Literotica.

Well Gauche,
As to the stories I've posted here on Lit, I too am guilty of needless sex scenes. But I've also written and posted some that are pure sex and some in the non-erotic (didn't do well either) catagory.

I've read Og's stories. They are wonderful :)

Congratulations Ogg, You write a good story , with or with out sex.. ;)

Dear Venerable Og,
Well done. I have a hard time imagining you writing something of less than 2500 words, though. You must have submitted only an abridgement of the preface to the introduction to the foreword to the preamble.

Add my congratulations - this is a validation on what we already know - Og writes good stories!

-FF (to read MG's latest version of War and Peace send her a pre-paid postcard with room on the back for your address - magnifying glass not required - for a slightly longer version, try LH - special this week both versions on the same side of the card).

Vincenzo,
I am very impressed with your entire post and your choice of the three westerns. (Pop Quiz: explain the differences of irony among the three mise-en-scenes.)

your pal, Perdita

Gauche,
I am compelled once more, to state that you are a fine writer—of smut, stroke, what-have-you—doesn’t matter (see the boy’s quote above). You consistently traduce your Lit. work, thereby snubbing (yea, nearly calumniating) my critical prowess. Stop it.

From my two years living in Surrey, I thought the British deleted sex from everything?

Your powers of observation were not acute enough. We do it anywhere that doesn't frighten the horses.

There are too many horses in Surrey so the action takes place behind closed doors or in Kent or Sussex. Brighton has been doing "sex" since the Prince Regent.

Thank you for your kind words and thanks also for the others who like my stories.

But Gauche writes good stuff to wank to and is therefore a valid and valued literary artist.

Og, it just means that your stories can hold their own., y'know.

In my book that is a plus. I've never been able to dive straight into the bumpin of uglies without a solid framework of story around it. Not when I read, and not when I write.

I couldnt frighten a horse even if I tried. On the other hand they tend to scare the living shit out of me for some reason. I'm a major horse-phobic. And you know, it amounts to the same thing. Sex is not fun when you just wet your pants.

I am sorry that you are horse-phobic. It would limit your pulling power with the "County-set ladies" in this country. I should have been horse-phobic then perhaps I wouldn't have to visit an osteopath every two weeks (or was it the surfing, the rock-climbing, the cross-country motorcycle racing, the Rugby or the Australian Rules?).

Whatever caused my damaged back, being thrown from a horse at a gallop and landing on a rock didn't help. My then fiancee used to run pony-trekking holidays on Dartmoor so I had to help. Riding a large horse bareback and leading another 10 is an interesting experience.

I didn't learn. My next fiancee was one of the County set so I had to follow the Boxing Day hunt with her. That is dangerous especially if like me you have a large build and need a large horse to jump the hedges and ditches. The horse jumped. I didn't or rather I was left behind - in the rock strewn ditch. I never saw the fox.

Og

Horses aren't frightened of my deeds, they laugh at them.

As for wet pants and sex, there are some people who like that sort of thing. Sick bastards.;)

... as opposed to your reader's holding their own.

Why not write QuasiErotica :

Write your story any way it works best . . .

And then, go HAVE sex! ;)

But, I simply CANNOT advise anybody to follow the same course I follow in writing

Good luck in the final competition, Ogg. :)

Maybe, if it comes down to the wire, showing the Lit. Original would get you extra points for versatility and e d i t i n g.

NAAAAAAAAAAH!!! Bad advice! :(

For one time and one time only. I apologise. Not for what I said (It was satirical) but for hurt I may cause.

I'm thinking of changing my sig.

Gauche, you would do well to use Og's line. It is more substantive in content and per author rep than the flattery you've accumulated thus far. I even agree with it.

However, I am aghast at your apology, have sent a PM.

deferentially,

Purr

Some stories are regular stories with added sex scenes.
Some are nothings which have no interest except prurient
interest.
And some stories are interesting stories which revolve
around sex. I wrote one story, "The Longest Minute," about
a man trying to delay his orgasm until his wife had hers.
Simple stroke story? No. Work without the sex? No.
And, of course, many stories wouldn't work without the
sex, but would work with much less explicit sex.
*Othello* would be nonsense without the sex, but it was presented
as theater in a much less permissive day than ours.

Hello Uther. What are you talking about?

Seriously, Perdita

somebody just said that they need a story line to get through before the boinking begins, thats great too, but myself having so little time to spend on the site just wanna get to it. no nicities (sp) no explaining the charachters whole lives, just give me the bare bones, no pun intended. a good fuck fest story has every bit as much merit as a beautifully constructed tale and every bit as erotic depending on your particular need.
