Sub Joe said:So is it the sexual nature of these photos that's at the heart of the outrage?
dr_mabeuse said:The photos do have a lot in common with standard internet porn, a fact that's been remarked upon by other people. They have that same goofy, look-how-big-my-cock-is tawdriness of people thiking their cute or daring when they're just actually offensive and slightly nauseating.
They knew exactly what they were doing too. The things they made those prisoners do are exactly the things that an Arab would find most disgusting and shameful,. very much like if you took a westerner and made him get on his knees and made him eat shit with a spoon.
These weren't random pranks. Someone knew Iraqi psychology very well and selected things specifically to strip these people of all sense of self-respect and destroy them psychologically. For us, having to strip and stand naked touching other naked people is mildly offensive. To an Arab male, it's the equivalent of making him take another man up the ass. They knew exactly what they were doing and they treated them like filth.

shereads said:If that's the case, the MPs were given specific instruction and not just told to "loosen up the prisoners." The MPs appear to be twenty-somethings from South Nowhere, Mississippi, and they aren't likely to have known a great deal about Islamic culture.
Not that it makes a difference here, but I wonder if we're wrong in assuming that all Islamic men are religious. It's certainly not true of everyone who identifies himself as Christian or Jewish.
dr_mabeuse said:I think they were probably instructed on just what to do to these prisoners to break their spirits. Probably some of the humiliation was just discovered in the routine handling of prisoners: strip searching and body-cavity searches for example, which are very offensive to Arab men. And probably some they just discovered by experimentation: crowding naked prisoners together so that they were forced to touch, for example. And really, religion has nothing to do with the horrid nature of these tortures. It's more a cultural thing. Just like you don't have to be a Christian to be offended by the idea of eating bugs.
About the only thing they didn't have them do was lick someone's shoes, which is about the Arab equivalent of sticking your tongue up someone's ass. Remember all those Iraqi's hitting Saddam's statues with their shoes? Showing the bottom of your shoe to a Saudi is the same as giving him the finger.
