I say it's "All the sudden."

Someone told me it's "All of a sudden."

This person insists it's a regional thing - I'm from Illinois - but I have no idea if this is true, since I can't really remember what people at home say.

I guess I'll go with a consensus.

I've never heard, "All the sudden" in my life. Sorry, Carson. :D

Fuck.

I must be crazy.

I had never it either until I moved to Wisconsin. But what the fuck do these crazy cheese eaters know? They all put rubbers on their newspapers and drink from the bubbler!

I voted "All of a sudden." I stand pretty firm in my belief that I'm right on this one.

Oh shit!

Is that where I learned it? Oh no!

(I lived in Milwaukee for 5 freezing cold years.)

Oh and Min- :p

I tend to do that regardless of the question or the accuracy of my response. ;)

When I said I'd go with a consensus, I lied. I'll keep saying exactly what I want. :)

Night night.

Same here. Sorry, sweetie.

And I am originally from upper Michigan and travel through Wisconsin every summer!

Now - how about the crazy poll? ;)

You know Min, I've always thought you were quite sweet, but tonight you have completely won me over. Your earlier talk of paddles (OK, I know you said padlock but still...) woo'd me and now it seems we share personality trait...

And yes, Carson, you probably picked up from living in Milwaukee. Easy to do... I've even had to stop myself from saying that I was "going over by" someone's house and that's one I swore I would stay away from!

G'night all!

G'night, L

well, I usually say "all the sudden", but English is not my first language and I mangle it lots, so it's probably "all of a sudden".

I am with minisue. I used to work at field sites in Hayward, Wisconsin and "Da Yooper" and I never once heard "All the sudden." My experience includes the National Lumberjack Championships in Hayward (one says, well of course).

All of a sudden.

It is a regional thing for the most part. I'm pretty sure that below the Mason-Dixon it's All of a sudden and above it's 'other'.

~lucky

p.s. What were the stakes of the bet? Sometimes even the losers are winners. :D

I have to agree with SSS and others here. I was raised in Wisc., near Milwaukee, (many years ago) and heard "all of a sudden" or "suddenly" many times but I never heard anybody say "of a sudden".

Of course, in certain part of the East, "sudden" means the oposite of "nawden".

:)

I've never heard, 'all the sudden', in S. Cal or New Jersey or S. Ontario.

Every region has nongrammatical sayings; around here, it's common to say "over top of" (the refrigerator), for 'on' or 'above'.

Many sayings get corrupted in misunderstanding, like I heard my mother frequently say to someone in bed "Up and Adam."

Thinking it in my head, I come up with All of the sudden....Just had to be different. :)
