It was a good day to just hang out.
Lee Ann and Julie had both slept in after sitting up in Lee Ann's room and talking until nearly 2:00 AM the night before. They'd had plenty to chat about: In fact, it was the first time all year that the two of them had really been able to visit. Best friends growing up, they'd both been heartbroken three years earlier when a promotion for Julie's dad had meant not just a new title and more money but a move across the state.
The girls had kept up with each other as best they could, chatting online and sometimes talking for hours on the phone, but no amount of long-distance sharing could match the constant contact of bygone days.
So, when summer vacation had arrived and Julie had finally been able to come out to stay for a week with Lee Ann and her folks, it was probably inevitable that their reunion had turned into a giddy, giggly and almost breathless attempt to catch up.
Things were more relaxed this morning, though. The girls had woken up and, finding that Lee Ann's parents had already gone to work, fixed their own breakfast. Sitting at the table as they ate pancakes, they'd discussed what to do with a long, lazy summer day stretching out before them, and decided that a trip to the beach would be fun.
They were almost ready to go, wearing their bathing suits under their street clothes and throwing a few things for the trip into their bags, when the phone rang.
Steve lived next door to Lee Ann and her family, though supposedly that was only for the summer. An English major who'd just completed his degree, he was hoping to become a journalist and apparently already practicing the necessary frugality by moving back home while he looked for an actual job in his field.
His call just then was to ask if it was ok to bring over the CD that Lee Ann's older brother wanted to borrow, but Lee Ann had told him that she was about ready to go out and could just as easily pop over to his place. So Lee Ann had knocked at Steve's door a couple minutes later, and the quick errand had turned into an invitation inside for iced tea and a phone call to Julie to come over and join them.
Things had often been like that between the girls. Lee Ann was the more outgoing of the two and something of a natural leader, which meant that the more reserved Julie frequently found herself pulled along in her friend's wake. Julie usually didn't mind much as she just wasn't the type to put herself forward and probably would have spent many days by herself if not for Lee Ann. Although, thruth to tell, sometimes Lee Ann's enthusiasm and spontanaeity got them into situations where Julie was not entirely comfortable. But typically, Julie could just stay quiet and remain in the background and things would turn out ok.
Julie took a second to make sure that she had everything she wanted in her bag, then glanced at her reflection in the hallway mirror. She saw herself dressed for a day that might include swimming, browsing through seaside gift shops, and eating hot dogs either standing outside or sitting in a restaurant that had its entire menu on a board behind the counter. Her feet were sandle-shod, and comfortable khaki shorts left her legs bare until mid-thigh, with a white tanktop that was not tucked into the shorts completing the outfit. Or almost completing it, since under everything else she wore a relatively modest one-piece bathing suit. The suit was black and did not tie in back but simply had narrow shoulder straps to hold it up, though it fit her well enough that the top part would not simply fall, even with the straps off her shoulders.
Satisfied with her inspection, Julie walked next door and was let in by Lee Ann. Introductions were made and iced tea poured, followed by some polite chitchat which was mostly between Steve and Lee Ann. Julie, for her part, was content to let the other two do most of the talking. Steve was Lee Ann's neighbor, after all: His family had moved to the neighborhood shortly after Julie's had left it, so while Lee Ann knew him as a fairly casual acquaintance, he was a stranger to Julie.
Neither did Julie have any real interest in getting to know Steve better. He seemed polite enough and was good looking enough in an ordinary sort of way, but nothing much about him really stood out to Julie, and the difference in their ages and educations put them firmly into different stages of their lives.
So Julie was thinking as much about the rest of the day, once she and Lee Ann left for the beach, as about where they actually were and who they were with; while Lee Ann talked to Steve, everyone sipped their iced teas, and someone suggested that the conversation be moved from the kitchen into the living room.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lee Ann, for her part, was paying more attention.
She noticed that Julie had withdrawn a little, as she often did around new people or even just in groups. Lee Anne knew that she wasn't really shy, but just reserved. Once she'd warmed to a person or a situation, Julie usually had fun. Knowing this, Lee Ann had many times made it a point to try to bring her friend out of herself. She hated to see Julie miss so much.
Another thing that Lee Ann was surprised to notice was Steve noticing Julie. Julie showed no sign of being aware of it, but Steve's face had lit up when Julie had walked in the kitchen door, and his smile and tone of voice as he met Julie and got her some iced tea had been friendlier than what was required for politeness' sake with the high school-aged friend of a high school-aged acquaintance. Lee Ann wondered if he had a thing for brunettes.
Lee Ann had never thought about Steve much in a boy-girl sense before, nor had she expected someone his age to notice her, but she gave him a considering glance now. He actually had a pretty decent build, and his face, while not model-handsome, had a certain appeal if you looked at it right.
Lee Ann also gave Steve some points for including her friend in the conversation. He was mostly talking to Lee Ann, since Julie was still wrapped in her typical reserve, but Lee Ann could see that he was making an effort to be friendly and address some questions to Julie despite Julie's far away look and monosyllabic replies.
Lee Ann groaned inwardly and thought She's doing it again.
She remembered how animated her friend had been the night before, laughing and looking forward to the coming day. Well, the day was here, but Julie seemed to be missing it; unaware of just how much of the world she was shutting out.
She didn't even seem to have noticed that Steve was going out of his way to make her comfortable, let alone that he obviously liked her.
Not that that really mattered: Julie was pretty enough that guys paid attention to her whether she encouraged them or not. And Lee Ann knew that she had not kept every guy out there at arm's length.
Still, she was not seeing anyone now, and here she was at the start of her summer vacation, just arrived in town and apparently more interested in the novel in her bag than in anything to do with the opposite sex.
Lee Ann kept up the conversation; at the same time watching as Julie stared at nothing while Steve's gaze periodically flicked back to Julie.
Suddenly, Lee Ann had an idea.
"So, Steve", she said casually, looking at Steve as he sat on the loveseat opposite the sofa where she and Julie were sitting, "Do you have any weed?"
