Jacqueline
Jacqui’s fingers moved over the consol and watched as images played across the screen. It felt like a long time since she had allowed herself to indulge in those memories; since she had allowed herself to consider putting her career aside once more. Hitting the shutdown button, she turned and crossed the room, ignoring the habitual series of bips as the programme automatically updated the viewing history before clicking into dormant mode.
It was strange, so unexpected. She knew she was hardly too old for her new assignment, far from it, but she had gotten the impression that the Federation valued her diplomatic skills more than her reproductive abilities.
Jacqui was a product of the system. Born as a result of the “Genesis Project” her parents had been selected by the Federation as a genetic match. She had been bred and raised within the state nurseries with regular if sparse virtual contact with her parents. She knew she must have what would have been called in the Olden Age brothers and sisters; or rather she knew both her mother and father had produced other offspring with other mates. She did not concern herself with the details and contact between genetic siblings was unheard of nowadays.
Of course “family” units still existed in the more primitive settlements, when emotion and impulse directed unplanned coupling and where people gathered to live in extended, unstructured groups. Jacqui had learned about this and indeed studied the psychology of human motivation. She knew that such communities believed that emotional support and group identity were paramount, but Jacqui had been taught that individuals held their own identity and worth and that these qualities were largely determined by genetics, but could be enhanced by appropriate training. To her this had made perfect sense. A belief reinforced by the first mate she had been coupled with; a man of experience who was 15 years her senior. He had taught her much not only introducing her to forms of sexuality, but by reinforcing her sense of duty filling her with the determination to live up to the demands the Federation would continue to make of her both as a mother and as a diplomat.
Jacqui sighed and flipped open the file she had printed out from the computer data she had been sent. There was no picture, merely a name and a list of credentials. The man was about the same age as her second mate and yet her last birthing had taken place 6 years ago. It hadn’t made sense until she had realised. This man was an Initiate to the system, Initiate being the term the Federation gave to an individual who had not yet been called upon to “breed”. She knew it were usual for an older partner to be chosen for female Initiates, but until now, she had not considered that the same might be true for males. Females were required to be virgins before intitation, yet as long as the male was certified as “clinically pure”, he had less restrictions put upon him.
Setting the file aside, Jacqui knew that there was little more to learn about him before the first meeting. She wondered what his reaction was to the summons to the Programme. She could imagine him reading her basic information, her name, age and list of credentials:
Jacqueline Marsaut – Age 32.
Psychoanalyst - Galactic Alliance of Diplomatic Consultants G.A.D.C.
Areas of study/expertise:
Biological development and life forms,
Civilisation and Models of Society,
Interpersonal contact and Negotiation,
Language and Linguistics,
Psychology and The Inner Consciousness,
Hostility: tactics and avoidance
The Arts – spiritual fulfilment
Even inexperienced as he was, she knew that whatever his personal feelings to the orders he had received, or how he felt about being coupled with a woman of her age and experience as a mate, he could not defy the orders given. In fact, the expectation was that a maximum time of 18 months would be given from meeting to birthing. If any couple failed to produce a child for the Project, both would be subjected to extensive testing and re-evaluation.
Jacqui had been aware of this from her first days as an Initiate at the age of 23 and hadn’t been concerned about this … until now…
Now it was she who was the experienced partner and as such it would be part of her job to explain the finer workings of the “Genesis Programme”, answer any questions about parenthood and of course although she assumed this man would not be inexperienced, Jacqui knew that an exploration of sexuality might be on the agenda too.
Either way, she knew that this Initiate would be totally different to her two previous mates!
