Hey all, reading over the FAQ and guide for series and there is no clear explanation as to how to change a series from “in progress” to something else. The introduction to series reads like its just another field, but when I go to the series settings there is no such choice.

Thanks for your help all!

On the Edit Series page (click the Settings cogwheel next to the series title) there's a picture box to upload artwork. Next to that box, you'll see "Works Sort Order", and below that "Is this series completed?" Select Yes.

This is what I see, am I missing something?

You'll probably need to click Switch on the Manual Series Management, next to the image box.

Ah I was wondering if it was that. The pop up scares me when it asks to switch.
I think the feature still needs some development. It automatically created series of my stories based on similarities in the titles, which was fine. But it's very basic (and the name of the series will include "Ch." or "Part" or whatever you use to number the individual stories). I switched to Manual to add extra information. It's not really any trouble. Just remember to add your new instalments as you publish them,

Two issues, though.

One, it can take a long, long time for manual changes to become final. I created a manual series for Too Cold/Too Hot/Too Early Not to Fuck on 9 November, and it still has Draft status. The individual stories don't have the Series pictogram either.

Second, if you have a manual series and upload a new story with a title that meets the system's criteria for creating a series, it will automatically create a new series. You can delete this without any problem, but it's a bit startling when you see it the first time.

Today I realised that I had to click the "Publish" button to send it from Draft status to Pending Moderation. So ignore the above comment.

I have ordered my stories manually and my series is "in progress." Do I click "yes" to the completed question to show the series and my chosen order on my profile page? And if I do, then add another story, can I switch back to "in progress," add my new story in the correct order, then click "yes" for completed again? And just do this with each new story/entry? Thank you!!!

It's not really an important setting.
I used to think readers couldn't see the difference. I recently learned that there is a series overview page which has a statement on it about whether "the author is actively working on this series" or whether "the author is no longer adding to this series" or similar statements.

I have no idea how many users look at that page. I wasn't even aware of it until I made a point of looking to see whether there was any way for readers to see the "in progress" setting.

I think the point is to only call the series completed when it is actually completed. The reason that this feature is there as because many readers would rather only start reading a series that is completed, so no I would not advise clicking complete if you plan on adding, as that would be very dishonest to your readers.

Ah!! That makes sense. Thank you! So, if it is an ongoing series... Hmmm... What to do...?

I believe you are supposed to leave the 'completed' box unmarked until you are done adding new stories to the series. Once you 'save changes' it should be live, or at least sent to pending for moderation if you added a cover or any details to the series description. But as far as I know, you can come back later and change the status back to 'in progress' if you decide to add more stories, but you can't add new works if it's listed as completed (for obvious reasons). If you're planning to add more chapters or whatever, just leave it as 'in progress,' save any changes you made, and then wait for future additions to be published before adding them to the list.

Okay. My stories are a series with a larger story arc, but I think they can be enjoyed as stand alone stories. BUT... There are some connections. Like reading a story where they're boinking in a car, *then* reading a story of their first time... Well, there are some space-time continuum issues there. Right now, my stories are listed alphabetically and that has caused some to be out of my intended order. And I was advised that some readers don't like chapter numbers or part numbers (perhaps that's incorrect information).

AND with that being said, I see no end to my series. I'm still writing and it seems like each new part gives me *at least* one idea for a future part. The end seems VERY far away, at this point. So, never completed...?

I'm new here, so I would greatly appreciate any guidance. Thank you!

Fair points. I know on the Series hub, I saw that my series showed as Complete, which is a benefit for prospective readers, assuming people browse the Series hub at all. The series hub would really benefit from a filter for Completed series (unless I missed it?)

I’ve tried to highlight my Series page with the url in my author profile. But if I had my way, the series page would be hyperlinked in the series headers of my Stories page.

Not a perfect solution but you can also edit your author profile to list the intended order of your stories

"Completed" means that series is finished, done, ended, finito. Lit has a vast number of unfinished chaptered stories where the author lost interest, gave up, died. The "Completed" function was to let readers know if a story was in fact finished.

In your case, where you intend running your series on a bit, it's not yet completed. Better to be open with your readers, that it is indeed "in progress."

Trust your readers to be clever enough to figure it out. I've got a stack of inter-related but stand-alone stories, which might share characters but not story arcs. The easter eggs only mean something to my following fans, but for a random reader wandering by, the "joined upedness" doesn't matter.

Don't get hung up on it, would be my suggestion.

Yeah, I'm sure some readers don't like chapter numbers, but I can't imagine they represent a huge or militant bloc of the readership. You'll lose some readers no matter what you do. But those readers are probably the ones who'll complain about any story that turns out to be part of an incomplete series. Anyway...
You can manually re-order your series to go in whatever order seems best to you, and you can slot new stories in wherever you want them to be, without regard to the alphabet or chapter numbers, so if you get an idea for an interlude later you can go back and squeeze it in. It'll primarily impact the order they show up in on your profile inside the series header, and will affect which page the 'next chapter' link sends them to if they use the series navigation controls.
And yes, if you plan to continue adding scenes to the series indefinitely, I don't think you should call it complete, until or unless you get to a point where you don't intend to work on it anymore.

Follow up to this...

When you finish a series, do you note that in the final story or do you just use the series function to mark it complete. To be honest, I wonder how many readers who don't write stories even know the series information exists and you have to read the fine print so to speak to note that it is a completed series.

I generally do both, such as adding an afterword, and usually mention it in the blurb as well. Laurel actually added "-Final" to the title of my last chapter of a long series, which pushed it past the normal allotment of characters. I didn't request it, but it was a nice gesture.
Not sure how many readers use the series controls, but I'm sure some do. It's probably old hat to whatever subset of readers prefer long works broken up into short installments.
