Is there a way to automatically turn off all sent PMs being stored in my message folder, or is it just unticking the box every time for each message?

Yes, there is. When you open a new message to send, there will be a blue header bar towards the bottom of the screen that says “additional options”. Under that header, there will be a box that says “miscellaneous options”. Within that box you will find the option to automatically save a copy of sent messages; it is the default option. To deactivate this function, remove the check mark from the box and problem solved.

Edit: I see I misinterpreted your question. I think Scribe is correct, you have to remove the check mark each time you send a message.
