A SENIOR GOOGLE research scientist has quit the company in protest over its plan to launch a censored version of its search engine in China.

Jack Poulson worked for Google’s research and machine intelligence department, where he was focused on improving the accuracy of the company’s search systems.

In early August, Poulson raised concerns with his managers at Google after The Intercept revealed that the internet giant was secretly developing a Chinese search app for Android devices. The search system, code-named Dragonfly, was designed to remove content that China’s authoritarian government views as sensitive, such as information about political dissidents, free speech, democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest.

After entering into discussions with his bosses, Poulson decided in mid-August that he could no longer work for Google. He tendered his resignation and his last day at the company was August 31.

He told The Intercept in an interview that he believes he is one of about five of the company’s employees to resign over Dragonfly. He felt it was his “ethical responsibility to resign in protest of the forfeiture of our public human rights commitments,” he said.

This is HUGE.

What's even more striking, is that the issues were barely mentioned in Western mainstream massmedia.
Not even the Russian one.

The only ones who commented were AlJazeera, and they did it in order to mention the censorship in Israel.

It reminded me of a recent article:

“Almost half of the combined print and online press is owned by just two billionaires – Rothermere and Murdoch – and that over 75% is owned by just six.
The consolidated and highly concentrated nature of the UK media is fundamentally undemocratic. In reality, corporate journalists are subservient to the executive arm of the state. The latter effectively guarantees the former the freedom to exercise their right to misinform the public and to ensure that the corporations maintain their privileged profit-seeking positions in society.”

______________

My take on that being that the “State versus free market”, “Socialism versus capitalism” paradigms have run their course., and we need a new political paradigm.

Now, that we have both Big governments AND Big corporations.

There has always been an alliance between big government and big business (or familial wealth) ever since big government emerged. Everyone has to pay protection and buy indulgences. Giving it a scary label doesn't change a single thing.

We see now multi-national corporate structures imposing totalitarian policies on the body politic denied to the government through the democratic process. Take for instance Japanese maquiladora companies like Sanyo, Hitachi, based in Tijuana engaged in cross border commerce with American companies. They require their American vendors to impose rules such as the Paris Accords or environmental standards like the Kyoto Protocol in their own industries and impose them independently on their American vendors despite the fact that those protocols are not the law in the United States. So in some way Americans are required to enforce foreign provisions they have as a nationa and as a people rejected.

The answer of course is to not do business with these companies but we all know where the temptation of corporate profits can take a company. We see Google and others eager to assist Communist China in oppressing its people by providing it with a better technology and economic basis to do so.

I can't find the thread or discussion about how both US and Australia encovered a jaw-dropping level of espionage and politico-economic bribery done worldwide by those pesky Chinese lol.

So I'll put it this here, because, I don't know what to make of all these:
-- On one hand the problem of Russian and Chinese espionage and disinformation campaigns was demonstrated to be Real and Huge.
--But one also wonders about a "Shock doctrine" type of scenario, in which such crises can be used to tighten social media censorship and all sorts.
I'm reminded of the recent French Twitter scandal, in which many French citizens (including Marine Le Pen and a moderate conservative politician) were singled out by DisInfoLab, for quoting RT or other non-kosher resources.

EU Commission warns of 'fake news,' meddling in 2019 European elections
https://www.dw.com/en/eu-commission...eddling-in-2019-european-elections/a-44903487

"The EU has called on social media companies and member states to better fight online voter manipulation efforts.
In particular, the EU security chief voiced concerns that foreign influence will be spread through social media, much like the cases of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections and the referendum on an EU agreement with Ukraine.

"All member states must take seriously the threats to the democratic process and institutions posed by cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns, and should have national plans to prevent them," King told Germany's Funke media group.

Aside from urging member states to come up with plans of action against election meddling, the EU Commissioner insisted that online platforms like Facebook and YouTube should take responsibility as well."We want to see real transparency, traceability and accountability online," King said of the social media giants, urging them to improve efforts in identifying and deleting fake accounts that spread misinformation.[/B]

The EU is working to establish a Code of Practice for tackling online disinformation
, with the collaboration of online platforms, leading social networks and the advertising industry. The European Commission hopes to adopt the code in September."
