Seems to be a change in the format?

A while back I knew one could have Italic or bold font within a story, if they wanted, by typing < i > and < /i > (no spaces, of course). So, when I submitted my first poems under this name I did that. But, alas, I had no italic font. I did some reading in the guidelines area, I think it was, and saw they changed some things around.

Well, I don't have MS Word so I cannot "upload" a DOC file to Lit when I'm submitting a story/poem. In fact, I've always just copied the text straight into the box provided in the Submit area. (I thought I saw somewhere that it was faster to submit work this way anyway....?)

In many of the writings I am working on I've used the Italic feature to put an emphasis on certain words here and there. Does this mean I'm screwed since I can't make a DOC file? Is there no way for me to "format" italic text myself with the < i > anymore?

(Let me add that I don't even know what program makes a RTF file, and if I made a TXT file it would be in plain text only!)

One last thing, the "guideline" I got this from can be found here: Bold or Italic? by Alex De Kok...

Thank you, any and all, who may have an answer to help me! :)

The last time I submitted, I got the italics okay by the method you mentioned. My last submission was 31st Jan. If it was changed after that, I wouldn't know.

Thank you for the info. I submitted poems during the early part of Jan, and they weren't italicized. (They did show up italized in the "preview", though.) Not sure why it didn't work.

I'll just have to hope it will on the stories then. :)

Perhaps it was a one-time glitch. You might consider resubmitting an edited version. Or PMing Laurel if it doesn't work. :)

I'm not that worried about it with the poems, though. Right now I'll cross my fingers about stories. lol

The only thing I can think of is that you forgot to mention in the "Notes" field that the story contained HTML Italics and Bold.

The default for totally automatic processing used to be to strip out all HTML although the preview function doen't trip HTML.

I've never posted in the notes field that I had bold or italic formatting in my stories and have never had any problems with it. I've submitted centered format and bold format for poems this year and they were posted correctly.

Maybe I didn't put anything in the "notes". I don't even remember anymore. lol

P.S.

It's good to know that centered text is allowed in submissions as well! :) Is underlinded allowed, too?

Those kinds of formatting have become very common and a comment that that a sumbission contains HTML code probably isn't as critical as it used to be. Still, it requires manual intervention to allow the scripts to process the tags instead of interpretting the <> symbols literally.

The scripts can't be permitted to pass HTML code without manual authorization or some sort of parsing mechanism because it can really mess up the "look and feel" of Lit if they allow unrestricted HTML formatting.

Without an explicit note that a submission contains HTML formatting, that necessary intervention can be missed even though a check for HTML is routinely done.

It's always possible that updated story processing scripts have been installed recently and there is a bug in them that blocks even authorized HTML tags -- thescripts ar always being tinkered with and refined -- but I think the "check for HTML" step in the approval process was just missed unless this turns out to be a pandemic situation.

I've always used the tags and never had a problem with it at all. So to be safe, it is advisable to mention the fact that I use them in the notes field? Never have done that before, but I'd like to be on the safe side.

I just had a story rejected for too much html formatting(I used <division align="center">) and was asked to keep it simple (<center>)
The other story went up, but there were breaks missing in a section that was meant to be centered, so that the words of the song all ran together. I've resubmitted both.
I figure that part of the problem was the valentine's day submissions taking up so much attention- and darn right, too, anyways :)

If you get carried away with the html, they will reject it. I did a how to on homophones and tried to use lists and they wouldn't allow it.

The poems weren't very long, but I did want all of that text in italics. For whatever reason that it did not work, it's cool. I'm not that worried about my poems. I won't edit them and resubmit.

For various stories I've been working on, I only have an italic word here and there. Ya know, to put an emphasis on one word within a sentence, etc. Maybe a dozen, give or take, per story.

On another note, I just remembered I have another question for anyone who can help. If you ever resubmit something due to an edit, do you lose old votes and scoring on it?

Not unless you request they be reset.

That's good to know. I've got some stories (including the one that's still pending) that could become a "series" if the first is popular enough. I didn't title them with a "ch 1" since I don't know, yet, if there will be more...! :)
