Ralf sat at the dinner table as the speeches droned on. Another black tie dinner passed without any excitement. The conversation at his table had been dull and mainly comparing wealth amongst the men. The females were too busy preening themselves and were too fake for Ralf's taste. He wondered if any of the women here would appreciate his talents.
As he looked around the room, he gaze fell on a table at the back. He scanned the table and he saw an apparition of beauty. A beautiful brunette sat listening to the speeches. From his angle he could see her, but he doubted she could see him staring. She had lovely long brown hair, flawless skin, brown eyes, lovely lips and was dressed to kill. The only blemish he could see was the rock on her finger. She was engaged, but he scanned the table to see if the lucky man was sitting nearby. He discounted the men for being too old or not worthy of having the love of this angel. As he stared, she turned and looked straight at him. He smiled, nodded his head and raised his glass in greeting. She blushed slightly, and looked away biting her lip. He had her.
As the evening meandered to a close, he excused himself from the table wishing everyone a good night. Rising, fixing his dinner jacket, he stepped purposefully to the table at the rear. As he passed a table he pulled a bottle of champagne and two flutes. He noticed the brunette rising from her chair. No one waited on her, so he assumed she was on her own.
Approaching her he said, "I hope you are not leaving before we have a quick drink?" She blushed as she looked at him. "Emm, of course. Just a quick one. I need to get home soon."
He poured the champagne and handed her a glass. "Where are my manners, my name is Ralf. Do you come to these things often?"
She took the glass off him, and sipped to settle her nerves. "Nice to meet you. My name is Lisa. This is my first one. My fiance was supposed to be here, but he had to go overseas urgently. He is a lawyer. What do you do?"
Ralf smiled, so she was all alone. Perfect. "I own a number of companies round the world. I am one of the benefactors for this charity dinner. It gets a bit boring coming to these things sometimes. What did you think of the fun and games, since it was your first one?"
Again she bit her lip, before replying, "I tried to follow what they were saying. I suppose my fiance would have understood what they were talking about." She stared at this man pay her so much attention. He was tall, dark and handsome. Cliches, but he fit them to a tee. On top of that he was obviously very wealthy. the closer the table to the stage, the more expensive they were, that's what her fiance had told her. This man had walked from the very front!
"Where are you staying?" His question broke her musing. "I am in a hotel outside the city, " she stammered.
"Have you seen the city by night? if you are only here for a few days, you have to let me show you the city all lit up. It is truly breathtaking." He gambled that she would be happy to accept a lift.
She hesitated, before answering, "Emm, I don't want to keep you late, but that sounds fantastic. Thank you."
He took the glass off her, putting his untouched champagne down, he offered her his arm, "My car is out the front."
