Katherine hesitated, her hand raised as she was about to knock on the door. She took another glance at her outfit, wondering if what she is wearing is appropriate. She can still remember clearly her conversation with Melanie, one of her closest friends. She had shyly confessed to Melanie her decision to join a dating service.
After having been widowed at a young age, Katherine had thrown herself at her work, building the business that she and her now deceased husband had dreamed of having. Now, with the business flourishing, she started to feel twinges of loneliness and the desire for companionship, for passion, for romance began to kindle in her heart.
Melanie was all gungho about the idea, almost giddy with joy at the idea of her dear friend finding someone special. While talking, Katherine’s eyes landed on some framed pictures on the wall. They were not there before - images of Melanie laughing, candid pictures of Melanie and her husband, some still photos of beautiful scenery.
“Hey, these photos are new and quite lovely,” she commented, having a hard time taking off her eyes off them.
“Those were taken by Adrian. Remember, Adrian? He is in college now and he has decided to major in photography.” Melanie gushed, all proud mother in that moment.
It was during that time that the idea was conceived. Katherine needed to submit some pictures for the dating service in order to continue the process. Melanie was more than happy to volunteer to talk to her son and arrange an appointment for Katherine for the photo shoot.
A week later, Katherine got a call back from her friend, informing her that Adrian is on a school break and would be willing to meet with her. Melanie gave her the date and time and instructions to go to the back of the house, where an unattached garage had been converted into some kind of studio.
Katherine checked her appearance one more time. She is petite of body, barely making it to 5’3. Her long, black hair hang loosely, framing her face. Just having left her office, she was dressed in typical business wear, a dark gray skirt and suit jacket with a pale pink blouse. She was carrying a shopping bag, with several changes of clothes, ranging from casual to formal wear.
Taking a deep breath, and hearing soft music coming from the inside, she rapped at the door, calling out, “Hello.”
