Secrets...

I was helping a friend in the States with his family tree (something that I would love to do myself but have NO IDEA where to start) and during our digging into his family's past it turns out that a couple of his relatives got married in secret.

They (apparently) just up and went away, got married and pulled a couple of strangers off the street as witnesses, their families didn't know, either at the time or for years later.

I found this idea deeply romantic, and to some degree very brave (I doubt I would ever have the courage needed to pull such a stunt) and I was wondering if there are any others out there that felt the same, or have married in secret themselves.

Can you imagine what the family would think if they ever found out about the wedding?

What would drive a couple to do something like that?

Would YOU ever consider marrying the love of your life in secret, and if so why? What would you tell your family if the secret ever got out?

I'm not really into the whole marriage idea so this just doesn't appeal to me. I like living in sin and having more fun!

I had to vote Other, because I didn't feel any of the options covered how I feel. IF (and that's a big if ) I ever decided to marry my current lover, I would under no circumstances do it in secret, and here's why: I am white and he is black. To marry in secret would seem to me to be cowering before prejudice, no matter what other reasons we might have for the decision.

Why?

It's nobody's business who or why you marry. Marrying in secret is a waste.

However, my mom's opinion is really important to me, so she didn't like him, probably I'd marry him first and then tell her that we're engaged before I break the news . . . eventually.

Nope, because my family wants me to be happy. If I'm happy with whoever than they're happy for me.

And if they weren't, it would be for a valid reason, like drugs or abusiveness. In that sort of case, I'd hope they get me out of that situation if I was so far gone to get into something like that.

Sounds fun, but I have to ask, (you don't have to answer of course ) why did you do it in secret in the first place?

was it because you weren't sure your families would approve or for other reasons?

no i couldnt get married in secret...my family and friends are really pretty important to me, i would want them to share in my joy and if they did not like the person i was marrying than we would have to work together to reach a compromise

but i actually voted for other, i didnt really see a choice i thought was right for me
