They had shared something wonderful. Zoey wasn't not one to let her heart feel much but this one time, she let herself feel... and what did it cost her?
Hurt.
As much as she tried not to replay that night, she couldn't help it.
Mark had said he needed to talk to her. It was late at night and she had just finished a 15 hour shift at the hospital where she was an ER nurse. Helping with patching up gunshot wounds and getting hit on by over confident residents was a common occurrence for her and right now, she was just wanting to get home and take a hot shower and then sleep.
But no, Mark had insisted they talk. He respected Zoey's need for rest after a long shift so this had to be important. He also had gotten back into town from a week long trip. He often left town on short notice and came back within a week or two. She never really delved into his world, all she knew was that he was a salesman for some aeronautic company and well, she trusted him with what he told her.
Except tonight. They had met at her place and he seemed on edge.
That’s when he told her.
“I work for a secret government entity and I need to leave town…so I came to say goodbye.”
OK, so it wasn’t that simple but he did have a hard time explaining it and maybe it was because she was tired, but Zoey didn’t believe him. She had accused him of dumping her and used this fabricated story to do so. It sounded like something from the movie True Lies. Only this was really happening. It ended with Nicole asking him to leave.
And that was the last time she had seen him. That was over six months ago.
She threw herself into her work. What else was there to do? She wasn’t one to cry over heartache. Hell no.
Maybe she threw herself into her work a little too much because she hadn’t noticed she was being followed for the past few weeks. She never noticed the car parked a few doors down. She didn’t even realize one of the new residents seem to take a special interest in her…
