Searching for Story

Hi, I'm searching for a story I read some considerable time ago. It was based in some fantasy time, where the protagonist I believe was doing some exams, and was a prodigy, since he was one of the earliest to pass some exams. I believe in the world there was some kind of system where women got their memories wiped, and if I recall this story was quite lengthy.

I appreciate I haven't given much but I remember this was a pretty good story so wanted to re-read it. Thanks.
