I am searching for some non-traditional stories here on LE. By non-traditional, I mostly mean the storytelling style.

Most work I read is first person. It works fine and I enjoy the reads, but it's not for me when it comes to writing.

I write in the fairly standard 3rd person omniscient but I use a cinematic writing style called Portmanteau. This style choice requires me to write three short stories that are loosely associated (cross-over characters or locations or other elements). I artificially increase the speed by placing an exciting or provocative vignette from one of the stories at the front to serve as a teaser. This is followed by half of the most impactful story (usually the longest), then a second story from start to finish, then a 3rd story from start to finish, and finally the 2nd half of the first story to bring it all home. For reference, the movie Pulp Fiction is a portmanteau story.

I'm interested in reading some works that don’t conform to a typical narrative structure. If you know any links to non-traditional erotic stories, please share.

My portmanteau stories can be found here: PORTMANTEAU: THE SERIES

Thanks,

Wendy Trilby

I don’t know any that do this, but have replied to push you nearer the top so smarter people than me can help with your query.

Good luck, fellow traveller.

I can't think of any stories like that, off the top of my head, but it's a good idea. Good luck with your search. I started reading your first story, to get a sense of what you are looking for, and you have a nice style.

I experiment with different ways of telling stories.

"Her Dream House" has a standard third-person, past tense telling, but the woman relates her fantasies in first person, present tense. I like the effect.

"Every Girl in Edgarville" is a story within a story -- something I like doing. Overall it's just third person, past tense, but that wraps around Abner's tale, which he tells in first person. The inner and outer stories converge at the end.

My two Sci-Fi stories "The Third Ring" and "The Third RIng - Tamsin of Sky Village" are both in third person, but the narration is by a story teller who opens and closes by addressing her audience with background about the events she describes and interjects her thoughts within the stories.

These aren't real adventuresome, but they aren't quite standard either.

There's a French porn flick (from 2009 if I remember right) that's titled "Sex Stories" in English. After a short lead-in, the film jumps between two dinner parties. One party is all men and the other is all women. There are relationships between some of the men and women.

Sex is the main topic of conversation at both parties, and the movie cuts out to short scenes as each person tells their story. The little cut-aways show that the men all lie about sex and the women tell the truth. There's another story that builds as the story goes on. One of the men is in a relationship with the daughter of the hostess of the women's party, but he's more attracted to the mother than the daughter, who he finds immature.

The flick ends after the parties break up when the hostess gets together with her daughter's boyfriend.

I thought it was a really interesting way to develop characters and reach the story's eventual outcome. It was part of the inspiration for my story, "Finding the Fourth Girl."

MelissaBaby's My Fall and Rise is not a portmanteau exactly, and it's told in first person, but it has a non-traditional style. It starts in the very middle of the story: "A young woman is imprisoned for her part in a violent crime." It then proceeds in alternating chapters to tell how she fell to that point and how she atoned and rose back up.

Love the idea. Not familiar with any stories in particular though.

Now I’m trying to remember the name of a movie I saw on HBO I think it was, the whole film from outside an apartment building looking into all six or 8 floor to ceiling windows at once, for the duration of the whole film.

It was fascinating, even if rewind was required. 8 scenes in parallel was a lot! EDIT:I think on reflection it may have been 2 windows/2 rooms per apartment, so if it were 8 windows it was 4 apartments, but still different events could be in each window.

And gradually all the occupants interacted with all the others by the end of it. It wasn’t dirty, but could easily be

Hitchcock’s great “Rear Window” movie is sort of like that. The main character watches people in other apartment buildings. He sees various stories play out, although the main plot of the movie focuses on just one of those stories.

”Love Actually” is another movie that uses 3 intertwined stories like the OP does.

Thanks for the plug!

When I start writing MFAR, I realized that no one was likely to get through a half dozen chapters of crime, drugs, prison and misery to get to the brighter half of the story. So, I came up with the idea of alternating the time lines. A few people got confused, but overall, it was successful.

I wasn't deliberately attempting anything alternative, I was a brand new writer and just couldn't think of a better way to do it. I suspect that is a more common approach than we might think.

While not a portmanteau in the sense that Wendy described, I have something planned that I think is somewhat similar.

It's an idea I had a few years ago, and have not gotten around to writing. There was an author's challenge, "One Night In..." where each story took place in one city over the course of a single night. I wrote a story about a call girl in Detroit. ( One Night In Detroit )

Between her appointments, she hangs out in a downtown dive bar call the Alley Cat Saloon. I thought it would be fun to write a number of interlaced stories about the various denizens of the bar, and call it "Alley Cat Tales."

In part, I refrained because at the time, authors had no ability to create and arrange series, other than through their titles. Now that it is possible to do so, I intend to write about a half dozen stories in the theme. Some will have no overlap other than being partially set in the bar, other will be more entwined. As it will be open ended, I will be able to add more tales whenever the mood strikes me.

If I ever get through my current WIP, I'm going to get started on it.
