Seamus Heaney RIP

BBC NI plaved a recording of him reading "Digging". That is one of the great things about modern poets, you can hear them give the definitive sounding of their poem and hear how it changes over time.

Heaney appeared at a nearby college several years ago. I was out of town on business as I recall. He was interviewed on local TV. I was surprised when he said Robert Frost was a major influence in his writing. I suppose I shouldn't have been since Heaney grew up on a farm.

His Open Ground is one of the few books of poetry I own.

Apparently, that was the college I went to. One of the staff members posted something about his passing earlier this week and it managed to show up on my FB feed. Our visiting writers program was something I wished I had taken more advantage of while I had been there.
