SCOTUS Releases Code of Conduct

What about if say one Supreme Court Justice had a super wealthy bestest best friend who wants to pay for lavish trips and gifts and just so happens to have a specific libertarian interpretation of constitutional law he's just overjoyed to tell him all about?

i think the fact they've realised they need to publish their 'ethics' list is important, and maybe more important is that it's now out there in the public eye so they can be better called on perceived violations. that in and of itself might help keep some a little more in line in the future... debatable, of course, but now individuals can openly point to a point they see as being violated rather than it all being behind closed doors kinda stuff.

I agree with this. It's a positive step. Now we should push them to do more.

The Supreme Court says it is adopting a code of ethics for the first time

The new Supreme Court code of conduct agreed to by all nine justices does not appear to impose any significant new requirements on them.

Well, of course it doesn't!!

Duhh!!!

Forgot the most important part of that sentence:

and leaves compliance entirely to each justice.

It's just groovy that they adopted a meaningless code of ethics with optional compliance.

My faith in the court is restored. :censored:

Meh. SCOTUS is functioning just fine. The code is fine. Senator WhitesOnlyHouse and his partisan pals will continue their hand waving over the fact that the judicial branch is a co-equal branch of government. They will continue to be properly ignored.

So you're cool with justices being bought for their judgements.

Congress has the authority to impeach justices.

It has no authority to otherwise regulate the Supreme Court. And if it tried, the Court has the authority to strike down any such regulation.

Checks and Balances disagrees. No one is above oversight and discipline.

Congress hasn't regulated the Supreme Court

So do you support SCOTUS having and improving their code of conduct or not?
I am not stupid enough to think they tried to improve their "code of conduct". But hey...believe what you want to believe. There are ways to implement a "code"...but why have it only for Supreme Court Justices?

Because other Article III judges are subject to a Judicial Code of Conduct.

They didn't have a code of conduct. I would suggest having one is an improvement
