Scores, H's, toplists and...oh yeah, trolls

Hi everybody. I'm a new author here trying writing of any kind for the first time. At this point I have about five stories published and another pending. (Obviously nowhere near the quality of the real authors here. My stories would probably be classified strokers, but, hey, it works for me right now.)

My first couple of stories (Marion's Turn 1&2) were well received in Fetish and got a coveted H. So I was all puffy with pride and life was good.

I was reading the author's resources pages and saw a recommendation to try to stay in Loving Wives for more views. So I put my next story there (My New Canadian Friends - bi MMF) and got hammered. I suspect some of the trolls went to Marion's Turn and bombed me because Ch2 fell out of H and now sits at 4.49 - I mean, that's just plain cruel. So I stopped the voting on Friends until it got re-categorized into Group Sex. Only after all that did I see the threads about trolls and the varied strong opinions in Loving Wives. Oh well.

For some reason all this got me curious about the ratio of H stories to non-H stories. Anybody know?

The ratio of views to votes is clear, and intriguing. With all those views, what kind of reader votes? Mostly authors (at least high votes)? Somebody throw some freakonomics at this stuff!

I also wondered why there wasn't a top author list since there are all the other categories. Or a top author list for each category. I can think of some reasons why not, but was curious if it's been addressed before.

Overall, I've received mostly positive PCs and emails and am happy about that. I like what I've read from the authors in this hangout. You seem to be a pretty positive, repsectful and supportive group.

So, I'm glad to be here and hope to submit offerings, hopefully in the right category, the readers enjoy. And maybe learn a things about writing along the way.

The ratio of H to non-H is roughly 1 to 2 (or, 33% of stories are "Hot")

I did a "study" of it in an old OLD thread, which you can find Here

Your question is rather unanswerable. The relationship between the number of stories and "H"s depends on a lot of factors. Such as:

The Catagory you post your stories in
The Interest of the readers and the following you develop
The subject matter of the story
The hatred index of your personal Trolls

So, if you want to look at "H"s for the sake of "H"s I could point you to writers here who have one after nearly every story they've submitted.

Most are more like me, about 50% or fewer. I get fewer "H"s mostly because I post all over the catagories and write some things that I know will piss off some of the readers. You see, it depends on why you are writing - for the "H"s or for you.

I think I hold the record for HATE feedback on a single story. As I recall it was 369 emails and PCs. Oddly, the story did a 3.89 even with that many people hating it, so it wasn't written that badly.

Most of the non-"H" stories I have posted on Lit are the first stories I posted here. Over the past few months, I've posted about 14 or 15 more and have a dozen "H"s out of them. I don't think that is important though.

I do look at the vote scores and consistantly they are in the 4.69 to 4.80 range with a few exceptions like Granma's House and Leah's Thanksgiving which were completely different kinds of stories than I usually write.

Also, I don't have a huge following on Lit because most of my stories are in Humor and do not have a lot of sex. What sex there is is scant. I do think the "strokers" do better than mine.

All anyone can really tell you is this: Don't worry about the "H"s. Just try and be consistant and you will slowly get better as you learn. Write stories you want to write and don't worry about the readers. If your stories are interesting they will follow you.

Good Luck and welcum to the nut farm ;)

Thank you for your responses.

rgraham666, the favorite list certainly has excellent writers. But I wonder how much is self promotion and how much is spontaneous. I complimented one highly placed author and they asked me to list them as a favorite.

Intersting thread JamesSD. I tried to see some of your pictures, but they didn't come up. Instead a note showed saying PicServer was out of bandwith.

And thanks for the advice Jenny_Jackson. I do write for myself, but the Hs got me excited for a moment and the feedback was actually kind of fun.

True.

On thinking about it, it's possible to troll the favourites portal by registering multiple alts and putting their main handle on the favourites page.

But that's a hell of a lot of work. I don't think many people would bother to do that.

Oh, and writers self promote. It's a weakness, and a necessity for the pros.

Hey, jomar.

Stick around for awhile. Read the threads, submit your stuff, enjoy. As for 'real' writers - What's one of them? If you get positive feedback for your stuff, then you've captured someone's imagination.

Have fun on Lit. :)

I usually have a pretty decent percentage of H's on my stories until I piss someone off on the boards (I seem to be good at that), and they get all neener-neener on me, and vote down my stories.

Ah, well. I'm happy with the quality of my work, and in the end, that's all that really matters.

Welcome to the AH, by the way. :)

I have a talent for that too. Amazing isn't it? Piss em off, watch the score go DOWN! LOL.

Fuck 'em.

if that's the only comeback they have to something I say on here, then I really feel sorry for the helpless little turds.

"Oh, yeah? I'll just vote down all your stories since I'm not intelligent enough to find a comeback to post on the board. So there! Neener-neener!"

:D

I (under my alt name) am listed on quite a few people's favorite's list. However, I have NEVER asked anyone to put me there. So, at least in my case, it's totally spontaneous on the reader's part and has nothing to do with self-promotion.

Spontaneous probably accounts for most of the favorites. But I am curious if the pros or more competive types lobby, and how much. Others I've complimented haven't asked, just the one.

I don't lobby. I have a few 'regular' readers who enjoy my stuff. I tend to put out drafts of pieces to them and alter the scenes according to their comments if I agree. I've seen one Lit author who frequents a thread alongside me who actually asks the thread members to read her stuff and vote. I tend to dislike that act, 'cos I feel it 'pressurises' those 'Lit friends' to vote high when they may not necessarily really feel like voting in the first place.

Oh yeah? Well you're a . . . a. . . *slinks away to Cloudy's submission page* :D

I average about 1/2 and 1/2 on my stories. My poetry only has 2 H's, but I'll be the first person to say my poetry is rather weak in comparison.

Getting 10 votes on a poem unless you have a significant fan base is a pretty big challenge.
