Short and sweet.Angel said:It is just as credible as any other religion.
KRCummings said:It's a bunch of shit made up by a poor sci-fi writer who had a phobia about psychiatrists.
This shouldn't be restricted to just Americans. Scientology is in several countries and is pretty much equally despised by all of them I think.
Truly..?HeavyStick said:Considering L Ron Hubbard created it out of a dare, no I don't find it credible.
wtf???? said:I thought they hated all medicine and stuff?

Why is does it get such a following though?

Angel said:Why does any religion? People need something that touches some of their own beliefs while at the same time telling them what to do.
KRCummings said:I don't know the numbers but I get the feeling that it only seems like it has a big following. I think people are curious about it since it's sorta odd so it might seem like it has lots of members when it's really only people checking it out.

kobalt.9 said:What are the basic tenets of this religion? What does a scientologist believe? I got the following from the official website. It's a little vague.
"What is Scientology?
The aims of Scientology are a world without insanity, without criminals, without war, where the able can prosper and where Man is free to rise to greater heights.
And if you were to ask any Scientologist they would tell you it is a practical religion, with practical answers — tools that can be applied to achieve greater awareness and purpose in the here and now.
Or, as we say it, when you have the answers to life's questions — there is virtually no part of existence it cannot be applied to for the betterment of life itself.
What people need are real solutions, real tools to deal with and effectively overcome human problems.
Every one of us has experienced it.
Think back yourself and you'll remember when you tried to help a grieving loved one, a struggling child, a friend overcome by addiction.
And where you have failed, it's only because you lacked effective answers to accomplish what you desired"

No. I sure hope the "thetans" don't come and get me tonight!!Telafio said:We all know that Americans are rightfully or wrongfully seen as some of the worlds most gullible folk.
Do you (Americans only please) really believe that Scientology is a credible religion?

Yeh, you are right on there.KRCummings said:I think there are a lot of myths about it but I've read in several places that they are vague to outsiders because the details are really fucked up. Aliens being a big part of it. Money is of course a huge part too from what I've heard. I read where you have to pay huge sums of money to move up to each level. You can't just earn or learn it, you gotta pay for it.
And the whole shrink thing. I read Hubbards bio once and he was ultra paranoid about shrinks. Hell, look at Battlefield Earth. The aliens are called Psychlos.
Oh, so they tell you what they believe in after you give them money. That's a great fucking idea. Hubbard was not a stupid man.KRCummings said:I think there are a lot of myths about it but I've read in several places that they are vague to outsiders because the details are really fucked up. It's pure crap. Hubbard was quoted as saying (paraphrasing) "If you want to go where the money is, start your own religion." He said that about ten years before writing Dianetics.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Coincidence? I think not.
