I'm on a DVD hunt. Anyone have any ideas for good Sci-Fi that's out on DVD. I mean real, gritty sci-fi like Bladerunner.

Any suggestions? Any favorites?

Equilibrium. Christian Bale in one of his best movies. Good story, great premise, amazing action. Highly recommend it.

Pitch Black. I think it's kind of sci-fi/horror, though I'm not sure. Serenity was good too.

That's the first one that came to mind. It's a great movie.

That first gun fight was the most innovative shooting of such a scene I'd seen in quite a while.

And if you don't get teary eyed during the scene with the puppy, get help. ;)

An interesting animated movie in the cyberpunk line is Renaissance.

I quite enjoyed Minority Report despite the fact that it starred that insane Scientolgist.

eighties stuff;
Outland,
Total Recall,
Minority Report

Gritty and surreal;
Brazil,

Gritty fantasy,
Time bandits,
Neverwhere
Ghormenghast

That's all I have right now... ;)

Outland! Damn, I've always loved that movie.

Gritty as hell.

Speaking of classics, there's always the first two Alien movies. ;)

Cool. I'll have to bookmark this thread so I don't lose it. Thanks for all the ideas. I thoght I was pretty inot this but I haven't heard of half of these.

Thanks. :cool:

No kidding.

I loved the whole idea of the 'gun kata.' And the fight scene with Tye Diggs :p

Saw most of those but I'll have to check out the last 2.

Not a huge horror fan but I'll check it out. Serenity? I'll have to look that one up.

It's a different take on sci-fi. Joss Whedon (Buffy -- the TV series) sold the idea to Fox, resulting in the TV series called 'Firefly.' Excellent dialogue (Whedon's an ace with dialogue) and plot and some damn sexy female characters. Unfortunately, after a single season, the show was canceled.

A few years later, the movie 'Serenity' (which is the name of the ship in the series) was released that wrapped things up, and allowed Whedon's ideas to be realized on a much larger scale.

Best to see the TV series first.

Alien
Slaughterhouse Five
Logan's Run

Not a huge Alien fan. I first saw it when I was probablly a little too young and it scared the hell out of me. I think I'm scarred for life now. :D

I haven't seen Logan in years. I'll have to add that to the list. :cool:

The last two are slightly harder to find-- they were both made for TV miniseries.

Rhys reminded me of this one;
The Man who fell to Earth (not off-world grit, but pretty damn good)

I'll do that. Thanks.

Ebay is a wonderful thing. :cool:

Adding to the list.

It's going to take me a year to watch all this. :rolleyes:

The Fifth Element
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Day the Earth Stood Still

umm, so many more I'll have to think on it...LOL

Check out 'The Thing.' There are two versions, a 1951 release by Howard Hawks and a 1982 remake. Both movies are based upon a story 'Who Goes There' by John Campbell. The original has James Arness [Gunsmoke] as the thing.

Leviathan
Deep Star Six
The Abyss

The 1982 version of The Thing is one of the best out there. Kurt Russell is great in it...

If you want to try gritty with a touch of humor, check out 'They Live.' It's a John Carpenter flick, so you know it's going to be a little weird. 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and David Keith fighting aliens no one can see without special glasses.

Oh, and Meg Foster's in it, too. Damn, I love her eyes . . . :p

Battlestar Galactica on the sci fi channel. It so totally rocks. The earlier seasons are out on dvd.
