So i have an advanced, sentient organism that starts off in a juvenile state, and at a point grows into another stage-- which it would prefer not to do because you know, must mate and then die kindsa things. So it asks humans to design something to help it stay in the first state and we make this metal thingie which can be implanted in the main nerve ganglia and blocks the change for as long as the critter wants (barring accidents that might knock the thing loose with excruciating pain and migration and other side effects.)

So what's a cool name for the thingie? This is not a complete metamorphosis but the organism growing more tissues, so the device inhibits new growth. I've been calling it a "pin" for temporary, but I haven't been able to put together anything that "PIN" could be an acronym for...

Primary Impulse Nullifier? The impulse being the genetically implanted urge to metamorphose. :D

Hmmm, if it is holding the organism in a juvenile state, then it isn't mechanical. It will have to be a synthetic gland. "Pituitary Implanted Neoteny" might work.

Two cents - I like Pituitary Impulse Nullifier...

Possibly Pituitary Inhibitor Node

I like inhibitor and node, but is there a spine-related word that starts with a P?

Vertebrae are so dramatic
:D

I think you'd better go back to pituitary.

I agree that Pituitary Inhibitor Node has a good sound to it.

Now we're talkin'. That tells you where it is and what it does and that it's artificial. Well done, that owl.

Maybe not a P but an I, to give form, placement and function: Prosthetic Intervertebral Neotonizer.

That's a name that just begs to be reduced to an acronym.
okay, now we are getting somewhere!

That should almost be the other way, though. Neotenizing intervertebral prosthetic.

My characters would be "NIPped". :D

And the past tense would be "(name's) been NIPpled." :p

But when the thing comes out, what do we call that?

unnipped isn't as snappy as 'unpinned'

I dunno...'unpinned' reminds me of a frat or a sorority...or a seamstress. ;)

Restored Uniform Neurology?

I'd say go with the PIN term a la Owl's acronym. The term lends itself nicely to the obligatory derogatory label: PIN-head.

"(blank)'s a PIN-head. You knew that, didn't you?"

"Don't let that PIN-head get anywhere near me!"

Placed In Neck?

You know, it kind of depends on the constructor, who is the one to most likely name it. You said he asked "humans". Is that Cybernetic Megacorp Inc. or the Government/Military or MIT researchers or some renegade whiz kid who builds awesome biotech gear out of counterfeit components in his garage?
