Meanwhile, Schumer is quite right -- the destruction of Social Security and Medicare WILL kill or impoverish millions, mainly seniors. The underlying policy issue is the privatization of Medicare. It is a very serious policy shift that has many consequences for many people. Currently 55 million people, older Americans that are for the most part retired and on fixed incomes, participate in the current Medicare system.

It should not be trivialized by either Schumer's "declare war on the elderly" proclamation or declaring the seriousness of the proposal and Schumer's stupid attempt to call attention to it as "lies, fear mongering, and divisiveness".

If Ryan and McConnell do try to move this forward in the House and Senate it is a non-trivial matter that should have a lot of very serious debate. There is a real risk that it would result in making Medicare benefits subject to the market. Great when the market leading indicator is over 19,000 like it was today, but not so great when the market tanks to 7,000 like it did in 2008.

That's exactly it. Essential services have long been absolutely required to be provided whether or not the person can pay.
