Schumer: Dems erred with ObamaCare

No shit, Sherlock!

Democrats made a strategic mistake by passing the Affordable Care Act, Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), the third-ranking member of the Senate Democratic leadership, said Tuesday.

Schumer says Democrats “blew the opportunity the American people gave them” in the 2008 elections, a Democratic landslide, by focusing on healthcare reform instead of legislation to boost the middle class.

“After passing the stimulus, Democrats should have continued to propose middle class-oriented programs and built on the partial success of the stimulus,” he said.
He said the plight of uninsured Americans caused by “unfair insurance company practices” needed not be addressed but it wasn’t the change that people wanted when they elected Barack Obama as president.

“Americans were crying out for an end to the recession, for better wages and more jobs; not for changes in their healthcare,” he said.

He noted that 85 percent of all Americans got their healthcare from either the government, through Medicare or Medicaid, or through an employer.

“So when Democrats focused on healthcare, the average middle class person thought, ‘the Democrats are not paying enough attention to me,’” he said.

Schumer's concession is a striking change of tone from what he said shortly after the passage of the healthcare law, when he predicted that ObamaCare would turn out to be a strong political issue for his party.

“I predict … by November those who voted for healthcare will find it an asset, those who voted against it will find it a liability,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in March 2010.

A slew of Senate Democrats, including Blanche Lincoln (Ark.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), Mark Begich (Alaska), Kay Hagan (N.C.) and Mark Udall (Colo.), who voted for the bill, however, ended up losing in 2010 or 2014. Republicans attacked them constantly for voting for ObamaCare, an attack that became more potent after the law’s error-prone rollout.

On Tuesday, Schumer said that behind the scenes he told other Democratic Party leaders, however, that they should not have focused on ObamaCare instead of jobs and the economy.

Yep, and Democrats still don't get how ITS THE ECONOMY, STUPID. Nor does the GOP. Famine and hunger are different things, pols are good at recognizing abstracts and awful at knowing concretes.

Honestly they just didn't properly realize how determined the Republicans were to scuttle Obama's presidency. Logically they did the right thing, pass the Healthcare they barely managed with a super majority and then come back around later for the rest. It just didn't work out.

No administration gets a guaranteed smooth ride or luv.

The only thing the stimulus was partially successful at was spending money.

Typical Keynesian nonsense. The economy could have grown despite, not because of, the stimulus package if it had not been ground to a halt by Obamacare.

It isn't that America need the Dems to "propose middle class-oriented programs" it was that Democrats needed to take their boot off the throat of the economy.

If you could simply gin up some "programs" to "fix" and economy (that was derailed by government encouragement of mal-investment) Japan would not have a "lost decade," going on two lost decades.

If you had an extra 10,000 lying around would you give it to an economic illiterate like Chuckie Schuman to invest for you?

The Stimulus bought the lives of Washington pols of both parties.

President Obama and the Democrat Party own the 2010 election, lock stock and barrel.

That didn't happen because of what Republicans did or didn't do.

That happened because of what Democrats actually did...

Odd how they took action to benefit all Americans instead of just the ones they want to vote for them.

No they didn't.

They never intended for it it benefit all Americans.

Listen to Gruber, they intended to take from some Americans so they could give to others all the while lying about how they were going to save $2500 on their insurance premiums because 50 million people were not going to be using the emergency rooms because they were now getting preventative care.

Millions more now have health insurance under Obamacare, your spin to the contrary notwithstanding.

Go peddle your revisionist derp someplace else.

How is doing something not only not requested by but specifically rejected by the majority of Americans of benefit to "all Americans."

That is demonstrably false. Not everyone benefited.

Maybe you didn't get the Gruber memo. In order to redistribute healthcare costs someone (lots of someones, most someones) have to pay more.

When they did this to Americans over the majority of American's will, 85% reported they were happy with their healthcare insurance.

You are basically an automated talking point quoting machine that no one reloads when the new meme comes out.

At what total cost per signup, including all the costs borne by others and government?

Is it more or less than the cost of just putting those millions on medicaid?

Many of those millions WERE just put on medicaid.

The biggest mistake they made was forgetting to mention, oh by the way, this insurance, you're going to have to pay for that.

People must be a lot dumber where you live cus where I live nobody thought it was free. A great deal of us were pissed about it.

First time the govt. has ever forced me to buy a product from some company.
Seems sort of strange that the govt. would endorse one type of company.
Especially when they decided they would be exempt along with many of their friends.

The part that I found most amazing was the fact that Chuckie looked and acted he has just found the missing link. As if there has never been any opposition to the train wreck that is and continues to be Obamacare.

As if he wants to be able to say a few years from now... "see, I told you so" which of course is a 180 turn (for him) from when this scheme was being shoved down our throats.
