Schools Are Well-Prepared for Tornado Warnings

Man, you tornado people have all the fun. We earthquake people get no warnings, no storm cellars, no trips to Oz....

Unfortunately those pesky critters are too much of a way of life. Too often those twister chasers become blase about them, until they have that crazy close call. I hate twisters.

It always surprises me in a pleasant way when even the most misguided youths seem to fall in line when a fire drill or tornado drill is underway. We've had a real life fire drill, and I can say with certainty that practice makes things smoother. Glad to hear you're all okay. :rose:

My insanity is showing here, because I'd like to see one someday.

I've seen a couple. The ropy kind are impressive enough. One that I saw I didn't realize was a tornado. It just looked like a half-mile wide cloud. But it was a tornado that was between quarter and half-mile wide. It was an F-5 that hit us back in the 90s. I think it killed about 13 people. Went right through McConnell AFB back when they had nukes. THAT was a good thing.

I've seen my share of hurricanes. I'll pass on the tornados, thanks.

The day that tornado destroyed the high school in Enterprise, and killed those kids, they had started warning us about the weather early. I live in a tornado-prone area, too, and we're all pretty well-versed on what to do, so I wasn't surprised when newsflashes started running across the bottom of the screen that schools were letting out early - ours at 11 am - the dangerous storms weren't supposed to go through until 1 or so.

I think there were only one or two counties in the entire state that didn't release the students early in the day because of the possible danger the storms could pose.

Unfortunately, the county where Enterprise is was one of them.

When I was about seven, I went through one in a van with my family on highway 55. It was the most terrifying and exhilirating experience of my life. I've been in three more since, but not close enough to see. I just remember peeking out the back window and seeing this massive tornado barreling right across the highway. I don't think I ever actually worried about storms until I was a parent. Now, I'm like, "Fuck this, everyone in the basement!" ;)

You realize that last statement would fit nicely on Lit with the proper reorganization..

Everyone in the basement----Fuck this! said with equal parts sultry and raunch

Is that the part where I smack my own ass?

I have never dealt with a tornado, (other than those spawned by Hurricanes.) and don't wish to. Having dealt with Nor'easters and Hurricanes is enough.

I have been in a protected corner of a building during a hurricane having a smoke when I watched a 150 pound bench lifted to the ceiling by an eddie of the winds. I have also watched a multi-ton Snowplow blown back down the road by the winds of a Nor'easter.

I'm one of the insane ones. Been through so many and I love watching them and never hide unless it gets near to right on top. Drives my mama insane. I'd probably be a storm chaser if I could.

Our schools were some of the ones who never shut down or let out early for tornados. We were just shuffled out of the class into either the hallway doors or the gym.

Now being in the gym was a riot...if it had hit the school the gym would have been gone and all of us in it knew it. I still remember the kid who told the principle that he was a dumbass that we should at least be in the more protected locker rooms. That kid was a riot :D They listened and after that everyone on that side of the building went to spend their time in the locker rooms.
