I attended a "Grandparents Day" luncheon at my son's school today due to the unavailability of his Grandparents. When I arrived, he was in line surrounded by classmates and their family members. He was craning his neck to try to spot me in the crowd, a concentrated look upon his face. I walked up to him and quietly asked him who he was looking for. His smile lit his face and touched my heart.
As I sat in the cafeteria, I looked around me and the many parents, grandparents, cousins and friends gathered around and my mind drifted to those children who will never again have a mother or father attend such school functions... to the mothers and fathers who will miss out on a lifetime of those events. To the parents who will never again be blessed with the feeling I got when I saw my child smile up at me.
It was all I could do to not cry. It was all I could do to walk away and go back to work.
