I'm curious as to what sort of music people like to use for scenes. Is there a specific genre that people prefer? Specific songs, even? Is it good to avoid songs with words so it's not distracting to the participants? Do people make music a central theme or is it just background?

Do you try to match the music to the particular activity? Do you make up your own CDs or tapes for a scene?

I'm a musician and I find music has a powerful ability to affect my emotions, so I want to be sure to pick the right stuff.

There is one that comes to my mind after I listened to it after a visit to a dungeon in november last year, and it's:

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams

I'd avoid mainstream music that has words and already evokes certain thoughts in peoples' heads. Since your a musician, select instrumental works that create the particular mood you want, and possibly create your own. Not only does that make it personal to your tastes and apply properly to the mood of each scene, but in public, it would be a signature for your performances.

my personal favorite is A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms. save for the track Judith which leans more twords hard rock. it fits the scene just right without being obnoxios... forgive my spelling please.

I like Gregorian Chanting. It has an eerie medieval feeling to it.

Thanks for the suggestions! I did a little mini-scene the other night and used the soundtrack from Crouching Tiger, which is mostly cello solos. The flowing, rich tones of the instrument fit the scene perfectly.

Wanted to bump this becaue I was just thinking about it...

Some of my favorites.

Nine inch nails
Type O Negative
Marilyn Manson (sweet dreams cover)

What else? I prefer dark music. Goth usually hits the mark tho I can't name many bands from that subset.

Goth music, absolutely. I like music that might be considered trance music. i adore Dead can Dance...I also am a big fan of Manson, anything by manson...from the good old, unsophisticated Smells like Children and Portrait of an American Family, to the raw poundings of Antichrist Superstar, the slightly techno, drugged out feel of Mechanical Animals, to the raving perversion of Holywood, and my newest love, the arch dandy grandess and twisted desires of Golden Age of the Grotesque...wow, see, you had to ask about music...so I had to mention masnon, nothing else puts me in such a mood to be a dirty little slut...

Fluke - Zion. On the Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. Or Enigma. Mostly instrumentals, I just find lyrics to be distracting sometimes.

Of course it's Mistress' choice whether there is music or what it is..... but I've had some very memorable scenes with Enya in the background.

my preferences...

i agree with a perfect circle's 'mer de noms' album...
anything by manson...
and korn's issues album :)

Enya or Enigma... something with deep tones and not too many words to get in the way of the feeling and tone of the scene.

What I prefer

I have a few that I use frequently. Broadly speaking:

Enigma
Enya
Gregorian chants
Nine Inch Nails

Then there are a few specific melodies that I find useful:

Bolero
Hall of the Mountain King (have to be careful with this one...some subs laugh when it plays)
