So, I've been waiting for ole' Scatman to show up as Marxist's avatar for a while...which got me thinking.

I've read that he was pure hell to work with, but I consistently loved his performances. He has (had?) the most amazingly penetrating stare, a way of making a 3/4 face shot seem like it was directed right at the audience. And that voice! Imagine The Shining without him.

There are so many great character actors who never get or got their due. Oliver Platt (Dangerous Beauty, Flatliners) Stanley Tucci (The Impostors, Montana). Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride, Clueless). Theresa Randall (Impulse, Whore). Ruth Gordon (Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby). Who do you love that doesn't get enough recognition?

This thread for starters.

Did you ever get a chance to see him perform live? Damn. I was young when I saw him, but it was so wild. He could do anything with his voice. And wild, and crazy. Made songs and skits up as he went along. Yes, according to reports he had a temper. But so did/does many other stars. It's alot of pressure they are under.

I can't believe Merelan and I are the only people who like Scatman, or any character actors for that matter. Come on, people. Live a little. I don't bite. Really.

I spank, but I don't bite.

Another one to add to my list: Julie Brown (Earth Girls are Easy, Clueless)

I love the Scatman. He was the only thing that made The Shining worth watching.

Character actors? I always thought that was a kind of a misnomer. I think Unbankable Actors would be a much more accurate description.

My favorite Unbankables include: Wilford Brimley, Emmet Walsh, and John Amos (anyone need a strong Black man?).

My very favorite is John (Fredo) Cazale who in a very short period of life co-starred in a number of great films (The Godfather parts 1 and 2, The Deer Hunter, Dog Day Afternoon, and my favorite, The Conversation), was engaged to Meryl Streep, and then died of bone cancer.

If they give out a lifetime achievement award for the Unbankables it should be called The Cazale.

I am just lousy with actor's names, leading players or character actors.

I can say that I do love Scatman and have heard him perform on TV. You can't beat scat! (Singing!!!! Not the ...ewwwww grosssssssss)

I also like blues singers...i.e. Billie Holliday. Again...I suck with names. I just like the genre.

Risia, I recognized all the actors you mentioned as some of my favorites! Stanley Tucci is a long time crush. I loved Big Night with Tony Shalhoub (another favorite).

Oh, yeah. Shaloub should have been on my list. I even watched "Stark Raving Mad" because of him. Not that I'm proud of that.

And Marxist? You're totally right; it should be "unbankables." Too bad, too. Lots of talent gets overlooked that way. And I can't believe I forgot Wilford Brimley! He was the only part of The Firm that I wanted to see. I'd almost eat Quaker Oats for that guy. Almost.

The name "Scatman" definitely takes on a different connotation here at lit. Am I the only one who he might make a more apropos av for nasty than for Marxist?

Oh, come on now, Oliver. Admit it: you really just wanted to use the word "apropos," didn't you? ;)

Of course. Vocabulary's like everything else - you use it or lose it.

Now, I better find me a good woman before I lose something really important.

Surely you don't mean to suggest that you *aren't* using all your parts?

I was referring to ablilities, not anatomy. LOL

But to answer your question, it all depends on what you mean by the word "use". ;)
