I know, I have movies on the brain lately. It's kind of strange, because I don't get out to see a lot of movies. (Yeah, I have kids of baby-sittable age.) I live in Los Angeles, "entertainment capital of the world." Humor me.

Reading about fava beans and Chianti on CB's dinner thread got me thinking about the sequel to Silence of the Lambs coming out soon. Anthony Hopkins was way fuckin' scary in that first movie, and he looks pretty creepy in the trailers of the new one. Who do you think are the actors with the most scare potential?

I think any good actor has the potential to scare the life out of anyone, though my all time favorite is Max Schreck.

I liked the book Hannibal, and I loved the ending. It was romantic, Beauty and the Beast, really, and I read the ending over and over.

Joe Pecsi :) No fuckin around.
Seriously, though, I think Hopkins has everyone beat. A classic, yet stylish intellect with a craving for human flesh! He could outsmart Einstien. If he wants to eat you, you're dead. You can't fight back.

I would have to say that Anthony Hopkins wins hands down. His portrayal of Hannibal Lecter scared me almost to death.

Ohhh, I am a dumbass.... how could I forget Psycho

It's funny that I started this thread, because I don't watch horror. I can deal with suspense and thrillers, but horror keeps me awake for weeks.

I didn't see it, but wasn't Jack Nicholson (sp?) pretty freaky in The Shining?

I agree with you about the ending, which is somewhat freaky. Serial murderer/cannibal as romantic love interest, I'll admit, it takes a good author to pull that one off. Heck, I even liked Margot - and I hated her.

Scariest Person - The Joker
Scariest Place - Amityville scared the living piss outta me.
Scariest Book - The Tommyknockers. No, I don't read mindcontrol stories.

Actor - Bela Ligosi (however it's spelled). Imagine what he could do with modern FX.

That's right.....Redrum.. Redrum..
Yes Wisper, Ol' Jacky Boy was quite menacing in the Shining. Freaked me out pretty good.

Killer Muffin:
"Scariest Person - The Joker"
I'll never forgive him for what he did to Batgirl.. yeah, him and, errrr, what's that guys name?

it could be old fashion; but I liked Vincent Price.
When I was younger, I watch a show called the 'Pigeons from Hell' or something like that. Two young guys come to an old farm house (hiking) that was surrounded with pigeons and stop to sleep. Upstairs an old woman lives and in the middle of the night one guy goes up there and gets a meat cleaver in the head. His buddy freaks out, (naturally) runs, and comes back with the sheriff. They both go up and out she comes with an ax. The sheriff shoots her dead. Scared the hell out of me. Did anyone see it? …years ago

I think Jim Carey is pretty fucking scarey. <<<SHUDDERS>>>>

Seriously I think Robert Mitchum in the first "Cape Fear" was one awesome frightening dude.

I am not a big fan of scary movies either. I did see Silence of the Lambs years ago. I honestly can't remember how much it scared me. I am planning on seeing Hannibal with some of the same people once it comes out, just because it must be done.

The scariest movie that I can recall, the one that gave me nightmares, was Seven with Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey as the bad guy. <shiver> Some of the parts in that movie were... <shudder> I can still picture them in my mind.

Anthony Hopkins does make a good scary guy though. It's the whole demeanor. And that little lisp like thing in his accent... "Clarissse" I can't wait to see Hannibal.

You talkin' to me? You must be talkin' to me.

Robert DeNiro as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver.
John Malkovich can do scary just fine.
But the best? Peter Lorre in M

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Christopher Walken yet... he is a pretty freaky guy (even though he's one of my favorite actors!).

I thought Willem Dafoe in American Psycho was pretty scary, too.

I also agree with the usual, though--Anthony Hopkins, Kevin Spacey (he has the demeanor goin' on, too), and the like.

No, for me it is Max Schreck. Nosferatu is one of the most frightening movies I've ever seen; part of it is the absolute mesmerizing appeal of Schreck as the monster. He LOOKS like a monster, yet there is a compelling fascination as well. I can really imagine offering him not only my throat but anything else he wanted as well.

Frank Silva (Bob) From Twin Peaks

One scene where he jumps over the back of a couch.......nearly shit myself

Jack Nicholson was pretty damned good in the Shining. then again I am a Stephen King fiend so call that favoritism! Scared the shit out of me as a kid tho. Thats why I love scray movies so much!

That was an episode of Thriller

I love horror ;)

There are many different kinds of terror and certain actors, films, and books wield them magnificently.

For spooky horror, the movie that nailed me as a kid (and does still) is the ORIGIONAL version of "The Haunting." The remake didn't even touch upon the incredible power of the first. Proof positive that there doesn’t have to be a guy in a ski mask dripping gore to scare the shit out of you.

For psychological horror I think Se7en can't be touched. When Morgan Freeman says, "This isn't going to have a happy ending," he ain't just whistlin' Dixie. I have NEVER forgotten sloth. I think I leapt ten feet into the air at that part. Proof positive that dripping gore CAN still scare the shit out of you…lol.

Kevin Spacey and Anthony Hopkins can't be touched as the "mad genius descended beyond human boundaries" type. But, for out and out psychos, I think Jack Nicholson, Christopher Walken, and Michael Keaton take the cake. There's something in the eyes where there's stuff going on you can't quite put your finger on. Tony Todd also gave me the shivers in Candyman...despite the fact that I usually find Clive Barker kind of lacking.

Best filmmaker of horror for me is Hitchcock - the master of suspense horror. I watch his movies over and over and STILL squirm. His kind of horror didn’t always lash out at you, more often it messed with your head. It was fabulous.

Also Romero, and Carpenter. Maybe not the best of films, but brutally effective. The music from Halloween still gives me goose bumps.

I think horror and erotica are very similar genres. They both touch upon something primal, and they both do so from so many extremities and angles that it can't be boxed into one or two things. They also rarely get the respect they deserve ;-)

Just MHO

Yes! Another fan of "The Haunting"! I love that movie. The part where the two women are huddled in bed while something stomps up and down the hall just outside never fails to get to me. And because you never get to see that "something", the tension is never resolved. It's a true classic.

I still think Halloween beats most of the crazy, inhuman psycho killers.

Btw.............Michael Myers could kick Jasons ass anyday....:)

ROFLOL

I think Jack Nicholson takes the prize for "the shinning"

Though I think Kevin Spacey did a pretty damn good job with "Seven"

I'm sorry to say this. But Anthony Hopkins didn't do the scare factor for me in "Silence of the Lambs"
