Thursday afternoon I go out to get the mail, and theres a puppy on the porch. I am guessing he is about 7 weeks old. I think it is a German Shepard...possibly with some mix.

So, we are leaving for Chicago last Friday, and I called the local vets, and the county Humane society, and let them know we found him. I posted signs on ten telephone poles in the surrounding area, the local gas station, and the three schools.

No ones called. This dog was well fed, and cared for; or so it seems, and it surprises me that no one has called us claiming him.

So we are going to keep him.

I'm calling my vet tomorrow and scheduling an appointment/checkup etc.

He's a beautiful dog, and I will post a pic in my av maybe tomorrow...my digi cam batteries are wasted.

I'm thinking it's a Shepard, but dont really know.

He has very blue eyes which tell me that maybe there is some Huskie or Malamute in him......but I dunno. He has beautiful markings.

The cats are cool with him so far too.

Any dog owners that have raised a dog from pup have any tips?

Cage train him if you can't be home with him all day.... I lost a whole couch before I learned that trick... it seems cruel...but it really isn't.. they grow to think of it as a safe place...

Yeah....I hate cages tho.....plus I have three cats that will be roaming around, and I think that would have an affect on the pup dont you?

Grrrrr.....Im not sure about cages, and I am already training him to go easy with the teeth. He did get into a palm plant we have today though.

I know a lot of people use them, but I have never been a fan of locking an animal down.

I will consider it though.

Thank you:)

I felt the same way about cages.... but I finally decided I would have to or else we would all be sitting on the floor...

Having three cats roaming around might be just the reason .... he will be safe from the cats and the cats from him... dogs are den animals... they like to have a safe place... It didn't hurt my dog...and after a year or so he is now safe not to destroy the funiture... but he still goes in there to rest...

Hmmmm, I will look into it then.

I'm just concerned about affecting the animals.....my cat is already pissed at me because I take the puppy outside every two hours to do his business, and we dont let the cats out much.

ugh.....

My lab loved his cage - after a while, whenever he wanted to get away from the family, or the cats, or just crash, we'd find him up in his cage, sleeping. He found a way to close the door himself. Made me feel much better about cage training him.

Oh, and get a product called "Nature's Miracle". It's for pet messes on the carpets etc. Works fantastically.

Actually I would get a Case of Nature's Miracle... LOL

My best friend has three beautiful Shelties. One is 13 years old and the puppies are only 3. He adores his dogs, probably the best pet owner that I have ever known.. obsesses over them, talks to them constantly and if he ever had a female that didn't like his dogs then she'd be gone. lol

The puppies are cage trained.. and don't mind it really.. they'd like to sleep in "Daddy's" bed but he's a big fella and big dog takes up a lot of room. They go straight into their cages at night without a fuss really.

As I said he loves them and he'd never do anything to hurt them physically or even emotionally.. so I wouldn't worry too much about your puppy.

I have a Dalmatian and a Puli, and they both love to be in their crates...I have them covered with blankets, and when they want a little peace and quiet, they can go in there and sleep with their blankies and toys and no one bothers them. That way, my furniture doesn't get destroyed either.
