The important thing to remember here is that the term "tropics" refers to planetary ocean currents close to the equator, NOT tree-lined beaches staffed by Dominican waiters. The tropics can expand while we slash-burn the fuck out of our rainforests. Look at what we did to the middle-east 10,000 years ago. Saudi Arabia was once covered by cedar forests.

Global warming doesn't necessarily mean the median planetary temperature increases. Rather, it most prominently signifies a dramatic shift in global weather PATTERNS.

The Rainforests as CO2 trap myth has been exploded.

Grass does a far better job than trees and expanding tropical climb means more Dominican Republics and maybe some decent Tobacco out of Florida...

"We?" Are you pregnant or do you have a mouse in your pocket?

We slashed down our forest, sold the logs and are burning the fawk out of what's left...

It's nice not having evening at 4PM. Hell, yesterday, the pool hit 84, and that only happened ONCE all of last year. Fawk the Forest: highly over-rated and the fawker is already coming back, we have more acorn sprouts than poison ivy, and THAT's saying something...

Mayan temples can dissappear within 5 years. No shit!!!

We. As in human society, twit. Quit being a smarmy little prick.

As for you, Cap, show me the science. And if you could, make it a survey NOT funded by The Heritage Foundation. Good science seeks to disprove a given hypothesis, and accepts only what is left. If a study aims to reinforce a cultural bias, it's called "massaged data." This is not massaged data. You've willfully misinterpreted what the article had to say, and it shows.

An academic, you are not.

Clearly, conservative is pidgin-English for "arrogant, ignorant and short-sighted." Do a Google search on "desertification." Let me know if you have trouble sounding out the words.

Do a search on "I don't give a shit" and let me know if you have any problems.

Then do a search on "What the fuck do you think you're going to do about it" and get back to me.

Ishmael

I believe you give all conservatives a worse name than they possibly deserve. Granted, I'm not fans of the bastards, but at least the ones I know around here aren't as big as an idiot as you are.

I bet all the drastically shrinking rain forest animal populations are a lie, too.

Ah, the wit speaks. Clearly, I am no match for your rapier intellect. Instead of dismantling my arguments based on logic and effective discourse, you've resorted to cliched jock-fag locker-room bluster. A shining example of the "No-Sword" technique. Munenori would have been proud.

I should have known from a guy who clearly lists ignorance as a virtue. Socrates once said that "The unexamined life is not worth living."

Were I you, I'd be mixing up a Drano martini about now.

You have no arguments. And you have NO solutions. Not unless you think we can pass a law in the US that is binding in the Brasilian rain forest. Or anyone elses rain forest for that matter. Last time I checked the US doesn't have any tropical rain forests. Which brings us full circle to "what the fuck do you think you're going to do about it?" Just one of lifes little delimmas.

There are plenty of solutions. Regulating deforestation through international treaties. Continued research into energy alternatives. Aggressive implementation of those alternatives. Actually SIGNING the Kyoto Protocols. None of it's easy, but it's better than hiding behind the "liberals have no alternatives," argument, which is the tired old recourse of sad pseudo-intellectuals who've wandered into dialectical territory in which they can't compete.

See, that's the difference between you and me, Ish. I acknowledge tough problems and look for solutions which may not be readily apparent, while you deny that there's even a problem. You're a quivering antelope, and I'm the healthy cheetah who's going to bring you down, philosophically speaking. I give a shit about the world I live in, not just Uhmurrka. AND, best of all, I can spell. So, unfortunately for your cornered-rat conservative wishful thinking, I really am just better than you in every way possible.

After yesterday's comments about how you're a cfhickenhawk if you're not putting your ass on the line in Germany, I really have zero respect for that particular poster and now today, you have to be an academic, which leads me to wonder what this officer's degree is in...

Why are the rainforests being deforested?

Because the natives are practicing slash and burn agriculture.

Why are they doing that?

Uhhhhhh, because they don't want to starve to death.

Well just fuck'em.

I think that where you part from Ish and I on the tough problems is you believe in Government as a soulution and we still listen to the Greeks, especially Aesop...

One must learn to avoid the 'mutual masturbation' threads of Ishmael and the Cap'n. The only purpose served is to be inflamatory and pat each other on the back. As far as debating either of these two, just see the tactics used in my sig, quoted from Ted E Bare. :D
