Sarah Palin says: No Rain, No Rainbow

For those of you who missed it, William Shatner appeared on Conan, reading snippets of S.P.'s resignation speech as beat poetry, to the accompaniment of upright bass and bongos. He returned for an encore performance, reading selected tweets from her twitter account.

I now have a new appreciation for S.P.'s elusive intellect.

(This link includes a 30 second commercial before each video, but it's a funny commercial.)

That's freaking brilliant. Too bad Palin can't get over her Aspergers and appreciate what she's written. ;)

She does not have Asperger's.
Indeed. As someone with Asperger's, I can tell you that it's pretty easy for me to recognize my own if I meet 'em in person or see 'em on television. You can't pin this woman on us. Ain't from our planet.

Besides, she keeps meeting people's eyes. Not Aspie.

You do know that you "don't get over" Asperger's and that several members of this forum deal with it daily?
That's very kind of you, though actually it's only the world we have to deal with daily, not the Aspergers :D

Brilliant.
Reminds me of some of the declamatory idiocy I heard forty odd years ago.
And very well delivered.

Indeed. We can spot a kindred soul a mile away.

But the world? It is their problem if they do not share or understand my daughter's high-speed vocabulary or young son's intense knowledge of every single electronic game in existence. Keep up, people!

Was, wasn't it? I don't think anyone could have done it as perfectly as Shatner. And did you notice? He's wearing sandals (Birks). :D

No I failed to notice the sandals. I noticed he's put on a lot of weight, though.

Yes, I do. It was a joke. Intended in the same way that people make jokes out of Tourette's Syndrome, which I have had the wonderful joy to endure throughout my life. I don't get upset when someone makes fun of it. Hell, I laughed my ass off watching "Deuce Bigelow."

Not sure about that. My GM at the restaurant has Asperger's. She meets people's eyes, but only in certain contexts. Not often in casual conversation, though.

Is that why I keep looking above their heads and to the right? No one ever told me that was one of the symptoms. I wonder . . . would life be easier if everyone had it?

Speaking of delivery, Shatner did a pop CD in 2004, produced and cowritten by Ben Folds of the Ben Folds Five - not to be confused with Shatner's first CD from years ago that included the classic dramatic reading of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. The CD with Ben Folds, called "Has Been" is all original material, with guest artists usually singing on the choruses, leaving Shatner to pontificate during the verses. Compared to this CD, the Conan performances were a bit lackluster, perhaps because Shatner didn't have time to really learn the material. I was impressed with the second clip featuring the Twitters, where the bongo player punctuated S.P.'s inadvertent punch lines.

I have both Tourette's and Asperger's. Most Tourette's jokes are pretty funny. Asperger's is a bit hard to pull off because Asperger's is a form of social retardation, more Mr. Magoo with fixations than a simple stutter and incoherency.

Oh, yes. One of the most common symptoms. Until we figured out I was Aspergers my husband thought I was ignoring him half the time because I almost never looked him in the eye.

And it's not too hard to joke about being Aspie, especially if you are. There's a billboard around here for summer camp for Aspergers kids. I remarked to my husband that they spend the whole summer never playing with each other.

Not that I have any idea if anyone else finds that funny, but so far a couple of Asperger folk and those married to them do  Gotta laugh at yourself when you can.

Most of my life I got along just fine with adults and beautifully with little kids and dogs. People my own age were a mystery. Yeah, spend the whole summer never playing with each other. Beautiful!

I often have fits when I get home from work because the urge to give in to my various ticks builds up. It worries the SO sometimes, and to be honest, it can be a real pain. I've pulled muscles and strained tendons with some of the arm and hand movements I do.

What I find most funny are the assumptions made about Tourette's. I tell people at work I have it, and they look at me funny as if they're expecting me to launch into a fit of cursing. It's always fun to explain what coprolalia is and that I don't have it.

My uncle has the twitch kind of tourette's. It is what lead my family to get me tested for a few things when I was younger, and found out that I had epilepsy (all better now). It's just one f those things I see around from time to time.

Somewhere out there, Alan Ginsburg's laughing his ass off. :D

Palin, I think, runs more towards the personality disorder end of things, Narcissistic Personality Disorder or something like that. I looked them both up, and one of the differences is that, while Aspies may seem to lack empathy, that seems to be more due to an inability to process some social cues in the same way others do. With NPD, the lack of empathy is more linked to the person's belief that they are somehow more entitled to attention and deference than others.
