[Sappho and Eros]

In recognition of Valentine's Day, a new poetry contest: Sapphos and Eros ​

Sappho was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from the city of Eressos on the island of Lesbos, which was a cultural centre in the 7th century BC.

In Greek mythology, Eros was the god responsible for lust, love, and sex; he was also worshipped as a fertility deity.


Sappho and Eros

1. Write a NEW poem about love, LOVE love that would make Sappho and Eros proud. No other restrictions. Must be an original work.

2. Send the poem to Sappho and Eros via pm by Feb 1, midnight GST Only one poem per poet will be entered into the contest. All other entries will be posted in an Exhibition thread, in which the votes will not be counted towards the final voting, and will not be eligible for the prize.

3. We will post them, in the order in which they were received and anonomously on Feb. 2.

4. Anyone will be able to vote on his or her 2 favorite poems per voting thread. Primary voting: Feb 2-8. NOTE: You will be given the option to choose 2 poems in the Poll. You will not be able to reply twice to the same thread. You can practice on the poll I will attach to this thread.

5. Two highest scoring poems from each voting thread will proceed to the finals. If there is a tie, all of the tied poems will be included in the finals.

6. Anyone who submitted a poem may vote in the finals. If you submit under more than one screen name, we will ask for your honesty in only voting once during the preliminaries and the finals.

7. Finals Voting: Feb 10-13

8. Winners announced Feb. 14

Hello folks,
A few details on the roles the contest committee will be filling.

wildsweetone:
1. Open pm's and send a notification to all participants.
2. Keep an independent list of titles and names.
3. Check anna's work voting threads for accuracy, make sure no poems were missing.
4. Match the winning poems in the final voting to the names.


MET:These rules can be confusing, and there is a chance honest mistakes might be made. To this end, MET will:

1. Lead the posse to make sure no one voted for more than 2 poems in each primary voting thread.
2. Make sure only those poets who submitted a poem vote in the finals.

4. As he is donating the prize, MET requested that he not have access to the poems and the names of their poets or the password to Sapphos and Eros

1. cut and paste poem titles and poems into a document
2. start voting threads in the order in which the poems were recieved
3. start final voting thread using the high scoring poems* from primary voting.
4. Post the names of the poets with their title so people can see who wrote what.

*We will not be voting nor entering in this contest. We may, however, write poems in an exhibition thread to be voted on Just for Fun! Not to be considered for the prize. Anyone may do this. If you enter more than one poem, the first will be put into the contest, and the ones that follow will be put in the exhibition thread*

*It is difficult to tell now how many poems from each thread will be taken to the finals, as we do not know how many threads there will be. There is a maximum of 10 poems in the final round. We will be fair.

WOW we are getting some great submissions! A wide range of styles, form, free verse and a full spectrum of experience levels! I am very excited!

Please send em in while it is still Feb. 1 somewhere in the world. If you have not yet, please do, off the cuff, to make me (anna) feel better about my eh hem yet to be written love poem for the exhibition heat. I am praying for inspiration.... and quick!

Hello Poets!

What a great showing of poems! Wild Sweet One has them all collected and ready for me to set up the voting threads. I will get them done before dinner time. If you want to send one in as an exhibition, that would be great, I will include the exhibition poems in the voting threads, but there will not be an option to vote on them, they will be there to view and enjoy.

Grand total so far: 18 poems, not bad for a sappy love poem contest

I just found out something the hard way. I voted for one poem on the Sappho thread and decided to come back later to vote for the second one, but that doesn't work. So, I can't vote for Beech Queen--unless I use another name, maybe.

I voted for 2 on another thread, so that worked out fine.

Yeah, you gotta do em both at the same time. Why don't you go vote as another one of your selves? It is not cheating or anything, it is still two votes from you, the you that you are. I am so glad you are the you you are because there seem to be so many other yous out there who they were and might be and sometimes are that I can not keep track. I understand Tess much better now.
