Strep A outbreak....but three Marines in training have died at the same base in the past three weeks, all unusually, two unexplained as to cause.

On Sunday, Pvt. Miguel Zavala, 18, of Greenfield, Calif., died at Naval Medical Center San Diego after a rash on an ankle spread to much of his body.

Pvt. Neal Edwards, 18, of St. Clair, Mo., died on Nov. 24 after collapsing during training on an obstacle course. Officials today said Edwards may have had a heart defect.

Pvt. Samuel Bruss, 19, of Kenosha, Wis., died Thursday after survival training at the base swimming pool. The cause of Bruss' death was still under investigation, but officials said his lungs were filled with fluid.

Does anyone think this could be terrorist-related?

There are weird deaths all the time. Did you hear about the various cruise ship illnesses a few weeks ago? In the back of my mind I wondered if they had anything to do with possible terrorist attacks.

I dunno. Everything these days makes us think of terrorism.

I wonder how many of those cruise ships were provisioned out of San Diego or the ports in that region.

Anytime you see groups of people in confined environments getting strange illnesses from now on, it'll tweak our OBL nerve I guess.

PS: What's going on with those pig farm murders? Any news?

Nothing recently....I think they're trying to figure out whether Legal Aid will provide the team of lawyers he's going to need...

(a clip from an older BBC report)

'Piggy's Palace'

Mr Pickton, 52, owns the pig farm in a suburb of Vancouver together with his brother Dave and his sister.

Robert "Willy" Pickton has denied any involvement

The two brothers also operated a drinking club known as "Piggy's Palace" near the farm, which was a haunt of bikers and prostitutes.

Mr Pickton, was charged with attempted murder in 1997, for the stabbing of a drug-addicted prostitute at his home, but the charges were later dropped.

Trevor Greene, who wrote a book on the case of the 50 missing women, said he had heard of a man known as "Farmer Willy" who used to invite Vancouver prostitutes to parties at his farm, but he had never looked into it.

Snuff films are rumoured to have been made. Also, there are people in high places known to have attended those infamous "piggies" Palace" parties who would rather the whole thing didn't get exposed........

The rash death

as stated on aol news this morning IT is related to strep. That 18 years old had pnemonia like symptoms. Had the rash on his ankle and it spread.

The article mentioned that the marines had stopped streaneous activities as not to trigger off anything.

The other deaths were unrelated. They were accidents. That was my interpretation from the news article I read. So I do not think there is anything more to that, but the skin rash strep eating skin thing does have me concerned a bit.

So who knows?

Since you are mentioning terrorism I have heard that it will be suggested that people be vaccinated for small pox. (I believe that is the one) I think that is the one that leaves that mark on your arm.

Terrorism can take many forms these days. We cannot live in fear but need to be aware of our surroundings. If we live in fear they have won, simple as that.

Peace,
Tulip

No.

Getting onto the base is very difficult. Access to the recruits is severely restricted. Only on visitor Sunday can they mingle with the public. Visitors cannot just go to where the recruits are. The recruits can access certain areas on visitor sunday. Drill Instructors give the recruits room to socialize. But not much more.

The Strep A outbreak could have been brought in from elsewhere. The recruits are either bussed in or flown in. Parents can't just drop them off.

It is conceivable that a terrorist is familiar with the procedures of how the recruits are brought onto the base and that area be contaminated. If that was the case, more of the San Diego population would be at risk and not just the Marine Recruit Depot.

Yep. Strep throat is one strange illness.

The cruise ships were out of Florida, they shouldn't have any relation to the MCRD outbreak.

In Vietnam...

Biowarfare was conducted by the VC in the form of infected females with bizarre strains of venereal disease (courtesy of CCCP), targeting US troops. If you've ever been a short distance from a base to a bar, it's packed full of GIs and females. All it takes is someone with a bad cough to infect 10-12 people in one sitting. If a female was flirting with a bunch, you could get mass infections.
I doubt they would come out with their suspicions, as it would create panic. They're probably trying to nail down a common event relative to the infected troops. :D

Wow.

There's been so little discussed about this case on the news that I watch. I understand it's a huge story in Canada.

I'd not heard a bit about what you and Lance have said here. I thought the number of missing was placed somewhere around 64.

God, what an animal.

The fact that the Vancouver police ignored and/or downplayed reports of missing women for so many years, allegedly because they were addicts/hookers, is the issue bubbling around underneath that will be around long after willie picton is gone.

Given the nature of the hard drug trade in Vancouver it could be that police turned a blind eye to "expendable" workers/junkies to keep the drug trade under predictable control.

If that's the case...it'll become a question of how high up the blamecasting eventually goes.

Miles - the streptococcus causes much more than strep throat. They just said an outbreak of Strep A - that's not always just strep throat. It can also include flesh eating disease, pneumonia, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever and toxic shock syndrome, among others.

Here is some info and a link about strep a

Group A streptococcal infections are caused by group A streptococcus, a bacterium responsible for a variety of health problems. These infections can range from mild skin infection or sore throat to invasive, life-threatening conditions such as toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis. Most people are familiar with strep throat, which along with minor skin infection, is the most common form of the disease. Experts estimate that more than 10 million mild infections like these occur every year.

In addition to step throat and superficial skin infections, group A strep bacteria can cause infections in tissues at specific body sites, including lungs, bones, spinal cord, and the abdominal cavity.

So far we are assuming we are hearing the truth about it being Strep A, right?

hey! they raised the price of potato chips!

terrorists must be to blame.

If the Marine deaths were terrorist related...

there'd be a lot more than just three...

Not necessarily, with a bomb I'd agree. With a biological agent like Strep A, it's very difficult to predict the outcome.

No offence, but US & Cdn military have given soldiers acid, exposed them to radiation, let them get sick in the Gulf and Vietnam and elsewhere, shot each other with friendly fire, and god knows what else.

We never get told the truth from the start.

We wondered if the Beltway Sniper was OBL too...I'm not saying the Marine thing is OBL related....I'm wondering if it's crossed your mind, that's all.

Watching our media and governments for possible disinformation is not necessarily a bad or paranoid act.

No, I'm not offended. That's why I posted both links. The San Diego community has been trying for years to get rid of the MCRD. They need the land to open up more space for the airport.

The San Diego link is the most liberal you'll get for that area. Our CNN has been reporting it as Strep A.
