What to know about ‘No Kings’ protests against Trump’s policies on Saturday

Opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration are set to rally in hundreds of cities on Saturday during the military parade in Washington for the Army’s 250th anniversary — which coincides with Trump’s birthday.

The “No Kings” protests are set to take place to counter what organizers say are Trump’s plans to feed his ego on what is also his 79th birthday and Flag Day.

The Army birthday celebration had already been planned. But earlier this spring, Trump announced his intention to ratchet up the event to include 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through the city streets. He has long sought a similar display of patriotic force.

Why is it called No Kings?

The “No Kings” theme was orchestrated by the 50501 Movement, a national movement made up of everyday Americans who stand for democracy and against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration. The name 50501 stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement.

Protests earlier this year have denounced Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk, the now former leader of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, a government organization designed to slash federal spending. Protesters have called for Trump to be “dethroned” as they compare his actions to that of a king and not a democratically elected president.''

“They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,” the group says on its website, referring to the Trump administration and its policies. “They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.”

Trump has said any protest in DC will be met with overwhelming force.

We'll see.

Will the entire length of the parade consist of screened loyalists?

Takes one person to step out to create problem. Will our tanks stop for a protestor and let the police beat the hell out of him/her/they on national tv?

I’ll look later. I’m sure as hell not watching such boring crap with another weaved speech. Did you know the whole Ukrainian War would never have happened ???? Oh.. if Trump hadn’t removed our Ambassador there to protect his perfect phone call impeachment…

They will have to do that. 8 miles of cops on both sides ???
If they don't have enough, they can always get cops from other cities. Police departments help each other out that way.

And since it's an Army parade, MPs will also be available.

Or? Force the neighboring states’ National Guards to protect the parade

his public mouthpiece declared he said any violent protesters but the receipts are all over the media. We know exactly what came out of his mouth.

trump whining he 'has to go through hell' so doesn't feel like a king... poor baby

During a meeting with Republican lawmakers and allies at the White House, Trump reportedly dismissed the notion of being a monarch. “I don’t feel like a king, I have to go through hell to get stuff approved,” he remarked.
not that he's not working very hard to get that changed...

He further stated, “A king would say ‘I’m not going to get this.’ A king wouldn’t even have the California mandate to even be talking,” referring to recent joint resolutions blocking California's efforts to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles.

“No, no. We’re not a king,” Trump added.
yet slips in that royal 'we' there. he just can't help himself and his desire to be seen as not only a king but king of the goddamned world

Now it looks like a new war in the Middle East is going to be raging by the time this parade starts.

There are rumors that pro-Palestinian protesters plan to hijack the No Kings marches by showing up in keffiyehs with Palestinian flags. This would be a huge win for Trump.

No doubt they'll be there, but their presence was never any win for Trump before. It only makes him look like the bad guy siding with Israel -- just exactly like it made Biden look like the bad guy.

Hundreds of thousands of pissed-off peaceful protestors.

Poor ChloeTzunami must be so disappointed, I know how much she craved violence 'n police crackdowns.

Tens of thousands here in Houston today, the weather was extraordinarily accommodating (early showers lowered the temperature from 92 to 80 and it's been overcast all day here).

America sent a clear unambiguous message to the man who would be King today.

Very few counter-protesters. I'd like to think that deep down inside, not even MAGA wants a king, but then I remembered that MAGA contains folks like Ishmael, Derpy and Fat_Tyler, so instead I'll chalk the "no-shows" of the fringe right today to simple cowardice.

Didn't see it, but if they don't have "Sousa's" music , it isn't a parade worth watching or marching in.

My understanding is the highlight of the parade yesterday were the up-armored robotic dogs, recently introduced as bomb disposal dogs and to investigate possible IEDs. They are able to "march" in formation at 2 mph....

....which puts the Special Forces Green Berets to shame, they couldn't be bothered to march in formation yesterday, even when passing in front of the reviewing stand. They just sauntered past Trump and pickled Pete. I suppose that was the lowlight....

Also they showcased the rather new "Infantry Support Vehicle", which for all intents and purposes resembles the fiberglass 1973 VW dune buggy. No doors or roof (there is a roll cage), but that appears to be the vehicle least likely to survive a direct hit from the enemy, akin to the World War 1 "combat dispatch bicycle".

Sort of weird seeing an entire formation of World War 2 aircraft flying in formation over the National Mall. Trump and Hegseth have a unique fascination with World War 2, back when the enemy wore uniforms and our fighting forces were primarily white and male.

With the parade gone and quickly forgotten, DC can now focus on a long hot summer of road repair from tracked vehicles.
