"One more minute," Amber announced from the front of the classroom. It was her first day teaching at Salem Academy, a prestigious private school in northeast Massachusetts. She was lucky to get the job, having lost her previous public school position due to budget cuts in Boston a month before this opening -- tragic, really, the previous teacher's sudden death had shocked the small community to its core.
Now in the final minutes of her last class for the day, Amber had assigned this group of students the same activity she had the five prior classes; a simple questionnaire to help her get to know her students. Who their parents were, their interests, who they wanted to be when they grew up, and so on. Just a simple, friendly icebreaker so they can feel less like strangers when school resumes on Monday. So far she had been very pleased with the crop of students she was assigned. All seniors and in the honors program, they didn't strike her as trouble (which would be a pleasant change of pace after her struggles teaching public city kids).
"Alright pencils down," she smiled to the class. "Thanks for completing my little questionnaire. We have a few minutes before the bell. Would anyone like to share your answers? Or have any questions for me?"
