My long-passed grandfather's birthday is coming up, and for me it is a time to reminisce. The long walks we used to take. The long drives. The special trips he would make to pick me up so I could spend weekends with him, and the advice he used to give!

Much was wasted because I was young when he died. If he were alive today and sharing his gems of wisdom, I'd be a better man. Those gems were well and good, but the one I remember most, the jewel in the crown of grand fatherly advice, came when he paused, looked me in the eye and said ....

"Don't marry a woman with big hands. It makes your pecker look smaller."

<smiling> You never know the wisdom hidden away in an older woman or man.

It is true though , some give great advice.

ummm did I mention I have small hands?

Good to see you in the playground too.

One that my dad taught me at a young age...

When you are having an argument with a fool--make sure that they aren't doing the same thing.

LOL Too funny!:D

My grandmother sang me this ditty: At the bar, at the bar, where I smoked my first cigar. And the nickles and the dimes rolled away. It was there by chance that I tore my Sunday pants, and now I have to wear them every-day! :rose: :rose: I am sure there is some kind of wisdom in there somewhere LOL:heart:

ok, there's the rule about women with big hands, but what about a guy with big hands... where's the drawback with that. I need to know....

The logic must be too obvious here in that ditty for me to see...still scratching my head! LOL

My Grandmother had numerous sayings (and wonderful stories) that have stayed with me all this time.

Fave story: When her mother-in-law took her to a speakeasy (with password and everything) during prohibition!:D

Fave advice: "Everything happens for the best." This motto has comforted me through many disappointments, and has proven over and over again to be true for me, even when things have gotten very down and gloomy.

Grandma's are great!:rose:

Jenny, you bought back some memories of my Grandmother.

She was a lovely lady, had worked hard all her life and raised a large family.

Her big treat was to catch a bus into the city on pension day, and have lunch at a department store cafeteria. She always had a roast and a pudding of some kind.

She looked so smart, her white hair in a sheer hair net, a coat buttoned up and a chiffon scarf around the neck. She had a lovely cameo broach pinned to her coat. She did look fine.

But what no one saw, was the old dress and pinny under the coat. She never changed to go out, just put her coat on and buttoned it up. No one was ever the wiser.

And her saying?

A coat can hide a multitude of sins.

I know that Nan was speaking literally in her case, but there's a lot of wisdom in her words.

Thanks Nan, I love you and miss you. :rose:

The bit of wisdom I got from my G-father was:

Never get into a pissing contest with a skunk!

Oh yes..........and he also told me repeatedly to "keep my head down, nobody's gonna steal your clubs"!

My Gramma died many years ago but I still remember 3 sayings that she told me!
Always tell the truth...that way you don't have to remember what you said.

If you do it right the first time you won't have to do it again.

And my fave...Always leave a good first impression because you won't get a second chance!
There's a reason she was my *hippie gramma* She was soooo cool!

Cool.

My father's advice to me when going to college:

Take yourself seriously, but not too seriously.

and

Don't let your schoolwork interfere with your education.

LB what is a pinny?

The few pieces of wisdom I remember most were......

Mamaw's favorite poem...

No man is an island
And none walks his way alone
What you bring into the lives of others
Comes back into your own

And then there was her sage advice that goes something like this...."When you are older you'll find your little man in the boat (I know now that she ment my "clit") and when you do row for all it's worth!"

And from my daddy.......
"Baby girl the roach is the best part. It's got all the resin. Toke hard."

and....

Break before you enter the curve and speed up while you're in it. You get better traction.

Hugs
Belle

I wish that my grandparents had been around when I was young, the last died when I was 2 years old. I have nothing but stories about them that have come from others. For two generations, my family members married late so having grandparents around to enjoy was not an option. ~Sigh~

Not having those memories is most likely what got me involved with genealogy, though. I needed more, needed to know about my families. I've learned more about them, and the preceeding generations than any living family members could remember...

My grandpa was a wise and sage man...I miss his wisdom and guidence to this day.

Nothing funny about it, but he told me back in '79, before he passed...

In the depression we had no money...now you have money and it isn't worth anything.

Grandma would say...you're not eating anymore, you don't like my cooking. Enough to feed an army and it should all be gone. lmao
