Their "Safeway Select" brands are taking over the fucking store.

You know what I noticed today? They inflated the price of the Starbucks coffee and gave very minimal selection, while underneath was a slew of Safeway Select beans at about the price I used to pay for Starbucks.

What a bunch of assholes. So, instead of giving us a break on store brands, this is what they're doing. Fuckers. Don't mess with the price of my coffee beans.

Who the fuck cares if it's Safeway or Albertsons or "your local store here." Has anybody else noticed this going on?

CH, it's still alive and well in Reno.

Our local grocery chain is like that too. They actually push two labels on cosumers that are supposed to be better or equal to the name brands. So we get a cheap alternative and an even cheaper alternative, which is usually pretty damn crappy.

When I went for groceries last week, I noticed a lot of my regular brand name things were up in price. They attribute it to the price of gas and shipping. The store name shit is produced relatively close to here so I expect to see a lot more of it in the coming weeks.

Hmmm..

I haven't seen them in Texas in years...so now they get to screw other states it seems.

Though I do miss fondling a certain fruit in the presence of beautifull women...

Perhaps I should take a trip to Reno.

here we have HEB, and i have noticed that its taking over the shelves, not that much more inexpensive either....

CH, I never pegged you as a fruit fondler. ;)

I didn't mind when they offered cheaper alternatives, but Safeway is apparently trying to force us to buy their products by offering minimal selection and high prices on national brands.

Fuckers.

We have Stop & Shop and their store brands aren't bad actually. But for the most part the price difference isn't huge enough to justify the quality difference.
Frankly I hate changing brands. I've been eating the same penut butter since I was 2 and I'm ok with that.

I noticed the state flag in that announcement, RamblingRose.

Only in Maryland would such a stupid idea seem like a noble cause to save the environment...:(

Ruby, I've definitely noticed this trend at the Safeway in my area, too. They spent a couple months upgrading the store to a "Super Safeway" with a gourmet section and a Starbucks and everything. Then, the prices on their store brands started creeping higher and higher. IN their frozen dinners, which I do buy from time to time (going to school, I need quick dinners sometimes), the prices are often higher than the prices of other name brand stuff!

I go to Food Lion now.

Withhold sexual favors from all Safeway personnel. That'll show 'em.

That's the only thing that makes shopping a worthwhile experience at all!

Sometimes Capitalism Sucks

A friend of mine was waiting for an item of clothing to go on sale at a store. When she went back about two weeks later, she found that the store had reaised the price on the skirt, and then put it on sale. The subsequent "sale" price was more than the original regular price.
Also, a friend that works at a grocery store told us that they put up the prices on essentials the week that Pension and welfare cheques come out....ripping off people who live on a fixed income. Kind of makes you wonder about where the world is going.

Another thing about the coffee beans. The Starbucks is in a 12 oz bag, while the Safeway Select is only 10 oz. The bags look the same, so you'd only notice if you looked at the amount.

Fuckers.

Ruby -

You can get grocery store men, but I'm holding tight to my group of convenience store clerks. :)

Ok Lavy. I'm kinda into the cute little box boys anyway. If they got a note from their mother, could I fuck them?

What I hate about Safeway here in Oregon, is that I have to sign on to thier "Clubcard" to get the lower prices and specials. Then when you check out, you have to scan your card and the company logs you food buying habits and sells that information.

I really need to find a cheaper store around here.

Oh that sounds only too familiar. I know Zellers is really bad for upping prices before the sale. Grocery wise, if you look at the ads at the end of the month, there's nothing but junk food and processed food on sale. It's tough for anyone on a fixed income to eat healthy when it's so damn expensive. Even I noticed last week, when the GSTs were out, that most of the regular things I bought were more expensive. Ok so maybe I'm nuts noticing that cat food was 6 cents more a can but I've got a fat cat ;)

I'm having culture shock after moving from SC to NJ.

Food is so much more expensive here than down there.

Things that I took for granted as being cheaper to buy is no longer there, and since these stores are not in the south, the store brands are not reconizable.

Sigh....

What I cannot understand is the why of it.

Stores do that all of the time. But what can we do? Stop shopping? I wonder what we can do to make suppliers/stores know that we do not want to purchase products when we know that prices have been jacked up. This is pissing me off.

Worked for an IGA for 3 years growing up (Still am, but that's irrelevant)

I changed prices on Sundays, early, before anyone starts shopping.

If you see a sale that has something you actually want, buy in bulk!

Wait.......so long as you can refrigerate or freeze it.

Of course, I still have 8 cases of Raman noodles lying around.
