Safety is such a big concern for us (or should be). Ya know, it really sucks and can fuck up a whole relationship if during what seems to you to be an exceptionally hot scene, your lover suffers from hypoxia for long enough to decrease her mental abilities down to that of a child, permanently.

Please state what safety precautions you use and have as well as safety items. These can be in general for your play area or just what you keep in your toybag and/or practices that you never ignore.

For myself, I've got CPR. (Side note: If you think you know CPR but have not heard of the AED, it's been too long and you need to learn the new stuff.) My CPR class was 25$ but many employers will provide that for you on the job.

I try to keep trauma sheers in my toy bag too for quick cutting out of restraints.

I keep benedryll and an asthma inhaler nearby as needed since these are issues for me.

In my home (where I only play on rare occasions) usually some candles are lit and I have several fire extinguishers.

Activities that I consider too risky in the hands of a (stranger) new lover are not participated in.

What about the rest of y'all? What do you do or have?

Edited to add this--just found it in my mailbox:

Guess what time it is? It is BDSM safety awareness month (yeah,...I made that up...but it sounded good...), so with that in mind, we are once again offering CPR. Our very own Bear will be providing the training, the certification is good for 2 years. We did this last year as well.

The training will be Saturday May 10 at 2:00 pm (location to be announced as soon as we know how many people). We need a group of 12-15 to make this worth wild. The cost is $15/person.

If you are interested in this training (and I encourage everyone to be trained in CPR), please let me know (mscaron@sbcglobal.net

I use bleach.

I clean my toys in rubbing alcohol, not bleach.

:D

Then, I am CPR certified and First Aid certified, within the last year. I certainly hope these things never need to be used in a scene or anywhere else, but if so, I am ready.

Other than that, where I play is safe for any reason, not just scening. The only medical issue that I plan for is hypoglycemia, so there is likely ot be chocolate easily reachable.

A medical virucide, and/or bleach.

Sharps disposal containers.

Lots of soap, rubber gloves, condoms, saran wrap for the girlies.

An EMT scissor. Also that awesome sheet plastic cutter where the blade is on the inside of a plastic hook-shaped head, for cutting out of mummification.

And SO importantly, a clear sense of my bottom's history and hot-button issues, what things can't be said or done without eliciting a really negative reaction. Mental safety is more elusive and invisible and so important.

I agree safety is a high concern with me........

We bought a special cleaner used just for toys but used anti bac. soap then alchole for years prior to this.

Many know we are into the rope deal so I keep Ice packs and heatr packs in the house, at least 3 pair of safety siccors handy in our play area. Ropes can work them self tight.

I have smelling salts in a first aid kit. Both skitten and I are cpr cet. she has first aid and I was an EMT for 6 years so we try tp play safe.

safety should never be taken lightly............

ATM, I have my multipurpose first aid tin, (Whitmans came out with a sampler that's a bit larger than an altoids, or SAS survival tin) Seat belt knife, various latex gloves/condoms/damns, and a marine fire extinguisher.
I don't own an autoclave, so I disenfect by boiling in an everclear bath. (I'd have thought Chilled Vodca would've thought of this, Chlorine is poisonous) Don't worry, I keep the temperature below ignition, and have the afore mentioned extinguisher handy. I Like marines because they're compact, and rated for anything that doesn't split atoms. (Alrght, it won't put out thermite, but if you're playing with that nasty stuff, I can't help you)
All that's just hardware, the bare minimum to run a scene out of a backpack because I don't have a personal dungeoun right now. I like to throw in bolt kutters if I'm using chain, but they're bulky, so I do without whatever I'd need them for. That's the trick, if you don't have the neccisary equipment, including safety stuff, don't do it.
The primay safety thing I use is common damned sence. I'd like to get more into asphyx, and blood play, but it scares the shit out of me. I don't break skin, and I leave the resperatory system the fuck alone because I don't want to have to open my tin. That shits expensive, and nothing kills the mood like having to perform CPR.
If you don't have it, get rescucitation training. If it's been a while, brush up on it, it's that important. Playing around water? get life saving. It's not just a name. Medical training is cheaper than doctor's bills. It'll pay for it'self the first time you don't have to take an ambulance.

What a great thing to mention! Its amazing how many ppl never consider medical issues when scening. Being involved in EMS, its one of the things that is foremost in my mind. i agree that CPR is a must for everyone-The Red Cross also offers basic first aid courses for the general public. Another thing to bear in mind is your partners past medical history-any currents meds that they happen to be taking-drug allergies etc. For me its part of the safe concept.

This is certainly an issue that I think needs to be considered by most "players". I know that in my own experience, we are not a bunch of immortal 20-somethings but most usually people who are 30+ and more often 40+. With the physical maturity also comes medical issues for so many and the awareness of medical needs that don't involve our crotches (well, directly anyway!).

With my allergies and my need to have an Epipen, I ahve made sure that all my friends and special friends know what that is and how to use it and when to use it and what to do after if they ever have to use it. I hope to be playing long enough to have to explain my then-partner the use of a nitro-pill. ;)

Just as an aside if anyone is taking Viagra NEVER use nitro pills or use nitro spray. It can cause hypotension (low blood pressure) that cannot be reversed. i work in EMS and shortly after viagra came out we saw several cases of this. This is the public servicce announcement for today!:)

Hi Blondgirl, Hope you enjoyed the books. Thanks.

Panic snaps are great if you do standing bondage. But like all nilla items converted to bdsm use, don't buy from a bdsm source.
