Basically the idea here is that the two lovers are seperated from each other by a thin flexible and clear membrane that completely bisects the room. One person goes in one door, the other person goes in the other door. The material is flexible enough to allow full penetration, but doesn't have quite enough stretch for the lovers to wrap their arms around each other.
So there are a couple of options for the story background. The obvious is that it is set someetime in the future and there is an incredibly dangerous STD going around. It is contagious for a long time before it is detectable. Once it can be detected the life expectancy is short. Condoms don't work because it can pass through skin-to-skin contact if both partners are sexually aroused (maybe it was engineered by a madman). Anyway, people who want sex either risk death or going into sex quarantine for two years with their chosen partner. Clearly this doesn't work so scientists came up with the above. There is also a glory hole version which is non transparent (and maybe only stretches in a 3 inch circle).
The other option is that it is for conjugal visits. Again set a bit in the future and convicts have been getting weapons and drugs smuggled in during conjugal visits. Because it is the future the stuff is nearly impossible to detect. The drugs could be hidden in pouches made from real skin, the weapons could be nannites which look like dust but would transform a meal tray into a knife or perhaps even a gun. Anyway, the courts refused to ban conjugal visits, so they came up with this safe barrier.
OR maybe it is a bondage fantasy. A person is locked inside what is essentially a latex cell. The fun in this scenario is that since the material is elastic, it is trying to force the two people apart. Since they can't wrap their arms around each other it makes it difficult to pull together.
