The virus came fast; so fast no one had a name for it, but The Virus. That said more for it than anything else. The Virus, at first, was just transmitted through the skin, but some hand washing and you were safe. Then it mutated. It became air borne. The scientists created vaccines, but it kept mutating. The vaccines weren't created fast enough with the evolving Virus. Billions of people died. Whole countries were wiped out. Everyone was sick or dying until the ultimate cure was found. It weakened the virus and gave your body a fighting chance, but that was all it was: a chance. You could still die or if your body was strong enough could live. Your chances were 50/50, but that was good enough.
Victoria, or Tori took that chance. She was just diagnosed with the Virus and she could take the risky vaccine. She depleted her life savings, sold her house, car, everything to afford the vaccine. 3 shots and she was in a hospital fighting for her life. When she awoke she was told she was Virus free. She had won, but she couldn't see. The virus had stolen her eyes.
Now destitute with literally no money to live on, no friends (the Virus took them), and no family Tori was forced to go home. She had received a letter in the mail while she was in the hospitable wishing her luck. It seemed she still had some family alive and wanting her to come to them if she lived. This was the time for family to stick together. Granted that side of her family was mixed and diverse with all races and creed living together Tori was happy she had a place to call home.
It was hard trying to live when you were used to seeing everything. Tori wore sunglasses usually and had a black walking cane with a faux gem at the top. She rarely used it correctly. She used it more to make sure she wasn't about 2 inches from running into a wall. Besides there wasn't a lot of people and the few that thought she was an easy target learned she could swing her cane hard as hell. It was true. Her other senses did evol. She could hear better, and smell better. That didn't mean some nights she cried for her lost vision.
Tori finally made it to her family's home. She knew it was more of a mansion having remembered coming to stay a summer or two when she was younger. She stepped off the bus that had kindly driven out of it's way to take her to her doorstep. She made it to the stairs and unsure, knocked 3 times before she let herself in.
"Hello? Aunt Gertrude? Uncle Max?" It was eerily silent. Had she come too early or too late? Where was the family. She was under the impression there was at least a half dozen family members here. "Hello?"
