According to early news reports, Barbaro was euthanized. Problems developed, Barbaro was in pain and the prognosis was not good. After a gallant fight aginst the problems resulting from his broken leg, Barbaro was put down.

This might sound harsh, but it's about time. Very few horses survive a break to the lower hind leg that is even 10% of what Barbaro had.

It was a valient effort, but pretty much doomed from the beginning. Barbaro, suffered from hoof infections nearly from the beginning. That is a near fatal problem in itself.

You have to give the owners credit for spending the effort to save the horse, but the ending was almost preordained.

Sorry, gotta correct you here. Hoof infections happen quite frequently, and are a fairly simple thing to treat/cure.

I've had horses nearly all my life (got my first around age 7 - still have them), and have treated many a hoof infection.

Hoof infections are common, Cloudy. That is true. But Barbaro already had most of one hoof and part of a foot removed. This was a continuing, degenerative infection.

What a shame. I cried when he had that first break, and have felt miserable everytime I see his name with more bad news attached.

He was a great athlete, and i'm glad he's out of pain. It makes me glad I saw my little herd this morning and did the brush and pick routine while feeding- I'm sorry for Thoroughbreds in general for his loss.

And if anyone wants to get involved in rescuing other horses not as fortunate with their owners ANYWHERE near them, let me know. I currently can pull up over 500 rescue orgs, all over the world, that are always in need of loving homes and foster homes for abandoned, abused, or neglected horses of all breeds.

It's a sad day indeed. He was a beautiful horse...I had hopes that he would beat the odds and survive...

I saw this this afternoon and it made me sad. They were so determined to save him but in the end, they did what was right so he wouldn't suffer. He was definitely an amazing, well-loved horse.
