I wonder if the Republicans might keep their powder dry for now? They could try and ram a nominee through the system before the election, although it would be one of the most outrageous acts of cynical political hypocrisy in living memory. But might they wait and try and use the issue of an open seat to whip up enthusiasm in their base? Like they did with Scalia in 2016. If Trump loses, they could still try and get it done during the lame duck session.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Supreme Court justice who was as pioneering as she was brash, died on Friday, the court said. She was 87.
The court said Ginsburg, a lifelong champion of women's rights and a fierce advocate for gender equality, died "surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, D.C., due to complications of metastatic pancreas cancer."
Chief Justice John Roberts said: "Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”
Despite her diminutive stature, Ginsburg was larger than life, both on and off the bench. Viewed as a feminist icon, she broke countless barriers, never shying away from making contentious comments along the way — with everything from her high court opinions to her octogenarian workout routines, earning her the nickname the "Notorious R.B.G." by her rabid fan base.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Friday night he has no intention of waiting and will put forward whoever President Donald Trump nominates.
"President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate," McConnell said in a statement.
It's alright, Republicans have long championed the thought that a sitting president shouldn't be allowed to make a nomination right before an election. Mitch is a man of his word, isn't he?
Damn it Ruth - you needed to make it 2 more months.

What is Trump hanging by?Its about Fucking Time RBG was hanging in by a thread for months now!
In a blunt tweet drawing the battle lines over the plan by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to force through a vote to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, former CNN contributor and religion expert Reza Aslan predicted all-out war on the Republican Party.
According to Aslan, even an attempt to replace the Supreme Court justice known as “RBG” would be greeted with fierce resistance.
On CNN Saturday, Center for Politics director Larry Sabato said that Democrats would be “hopping mad” over the Supreme Court issue — and would exact revenge on Republicans if they fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat by expanding the size of the Supreme Court.
“Are you saying that, should the Republicans be successful in getting a nominee approved, and perhaps then Joe Biden is elected president, you think there would be a serious effort to expand the court, so as to offset that which just took place?” asked CNN host Michael Smerconish.
“Yeah, as long as the Democrats also control the Senate and House,” said Sabato. “It’s just an act of Congress. So, yes, that will happen. And Democrats are already saying they want an extra one for what was done to Merrick Garland. And they want one now for what’s being done to the Ginsburg seat. And they want one for a spare. They want a spare. They want three.”
I wonder if the Republicans might keep their powder dry for now? They could try and ram a nominee through the system before the election, although it would be one of the most outrageous acts of cynical political hypocrisy EVER. But might they wait and try and use the issue of an open seat to whip up enthusiasm in their base? Like they did with Scalia in 2016. If Trump loses, they could still try and get it done during the lame duck session.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” Slate legal analyst Dahlia Lithwick called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY for treating the Supreme Court like it is his personal “toy” and urged Democrats to begin an all-out war against the GOP leader and his Senate minions over Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat.
Speaking with host Joy Reid, on loan from her evening MSNBC show, Lithwick was unsparing in attacking McConnell and said every tool — including adding more justices to the Supreme Court — should be used to regain control of the court from Republicans.
In a five-part tweet attempting to explain away his about-face over agreeing to move promptly forward with replacing the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg just weeks before a presidential election, Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) put the onus on Democrats because of the way they treated now-Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his Senate hearings.
It is not yet clear whether Republicans have locked down the votes to force through a Supreme Court confirmation in the remaining time before the 2020 election, or the lame duck session afterward, although President Donald Trump and GOP leaders have signaled their intent to try to do so.
However, on CNN Saturday, former Hillary Clinton strategist Jess McIntosh outlined one obstacle for Republicans: vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
RBG was an ICON. Best to her and her family. I disagreed with her politics, but she was widely respected as a jurist.
That said....this is all HER FAULT.
She could've resigned under Obama, and many liberals asked...no begged...her to do it. She gambled that Hillary would win the election...and she lost.
Now...will Mitch and Trump replace her....damn straight. Fuckin' A.
Will Romney, Collins, Murkowski, and Gardner vote against an RBG replacement. One might...maybe two, but the nominee will get approved by the Senate, and there's a good chance that person will be seated on the court BEFORE the election.
Republican voters turn out for the Supreme Court. This is a NET WIN for republicans.
Democrats lost four...FOUR Senate Seats after the Kavanaugh fiasco. Republicans remember.
Finally....fuck the democrats. I'll say that again....Fuck the Democrats.
You created this mess by eliminating the filibuster. Republicans TOLD YOU NOT TOO!!
You created this mess with Bork, but ultimately, you created it with Kavanaugh.
You created this mess when you pushed Obamacare through using reconciliation.
You created this mess with "Pen and a Phone"...DACA...policymaking.
You created this mess when it became easier to riot and loot...than to discuss issues.
You are your own worst enemy, but your too selfish and self-absorbed to understand that simple fact.
No one on the Republican side respects you. No on wants to work with spoiled children.
NO ONE is scared of your threats....in case you didn't realize that yet.
You have serious psychological problems.
“President Trump has the constitutional authority to make a nomination to fill the Supreme Court vacancy, and I would have no objection to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s beginning the process of reviewing his nominee’s credentials,” Collins wrote.
“Given the proximity of the presidential election, however, I do not believe that the Senate should vote on the nominee prior to the election. In fairness to the American people, who will either be re-electing the president or selecting a new one, the decision a lifetime appointment should be made by the president who is elected on November 3rd,” she wrote.
He's not wrong, though. Name call all you like, it seems to be one of the arrows in your quiver. When someone disagrees with your views, attack.
The threats from the left are pouring in, do as we say or we'll burn it down.
You know, like they've been burning the police stations and small businesses.
Why on Earth would anyone show belly to cowards like that?
As another poster said in this forum, people don't like to be told what to do.
Do as we say or burn? Hardly. You are already getting arrested by Feds, so keep on playing stupid games and win those stupid prizes.
Fact: Harry Reid eliminated the filibuster 60 vote requirement.
Fact: Mitch McConnell told him not too. He did it anyway.
That's why we are here today. Republicans don't need Democrats to approve a new Supreme Court Justice.
Cry all you want, Carnal. Those are the facts. My only issues are laughing at the party who created their own bed...now they're complaining about it.
And you seem to have ....isss-ooos yourself....
Got any facts that contradict mine? I didn't think so.
Which would be just fine if Obama had been able to replace Scalia. Fair's fair.Now...will Mitch and Trump replace her....damn straight. Fuckin' A.
Actually, Jay, the Dems won 67% of the Senate seats that were up in 2018, and the Democratic "minority" in the current Senate represents 15 million more people than the Republicans do.Democrats lost four...FOUR Senate Seats after the Kavanaugh fiasco. Republicans remember.
Finally....fuck the democrats. I'll say that again....Fuck the Democrats.
Actually, all Republicans in the Senate voted yes, and only three Democrats did.You created this mess by eliminating the filibuster. Republicans TOLD YOU NOT TOO!!
Bork and Kavanaugh both got hearings and a fair chance to convince their critics that they were not an extremist and a rapist respectively. You created this mess with Bork, but ultimately, you created it with Kavanaugh.
Obama bent over backwards to achieve bipartisan consensus. Not a single Republican would even give lip service to meeting halfway. You created this mess when you pushed Obamacare through using reconciliation.
The rioting happened because people like you refused to even listen, never mind "discuss issues."You created this mess when it became easier to riot and loot...than to discuss issues.
A Trump-supporter calling others "too selfish and self-absorbed"...projection 101. I've got nothing to add.You are your own worst enemy, but your too selfish and self-absorbed to understand that simple fact.
A broken clock is right twice a day. But you seem to think that somehow reflects well on your side. It doesn't. At all.No one on the Republican side respects you.
Which is exactly why Trump is going to get his ass handed to him on November 3.No on wants to work with spoiled children.
What threats? That there will be consequences for McConnell's rank hypocrisy? If that were true, there wouldn't be a rush to get that seat filled before RBG's body is cold.NO ONE is scared of your threats....in case you didn't realize that yet.
What? You're just incoherent.
And Cuck is totally wrong. "This situation" is not anyone's doing but Mitch McConnell's. You can spin all you want, it's Mitch McConnell's. You lying sleazebag hypocrites already want to frame this as "Democrats" fault, when the whole world sees what a lying bunch of scumbag hypocrites YOU are. You will never run away from it.
Also, Cuck Weirdo obvs has personal iss-oos with so-called "Democrats" that in fact, make me think he's psychologically disturbed. You're just dumb.
