As it turns out Putin wanted Hillary to win but was totally ignorant of our election process. When it looked like Trump was winning in the East, Putin made his people run up Hillarys votes in California, Hawaii, etc so her vote total would swamp Trump. But he didn't know about the electoral vote. All the extra millions in California were for nothing.
