MIAMI (Reuters) - Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh turned himself into police in Florida on Friday and was charged with prescription drug fraud as part of a probe that began more than two years ago, authorities said.

Limbaugh, who admitted an addiction to prescription painkillers in October 2003 after reports he was facing an investigation, was released on $3,000 bail after being held about one hour at the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Under a deal disclosed by Limbaugh's attorney, Roy Black, the single count of "doctor shopping" against the radio talk-show host will be dismissed in 18 months.

For that to happen, Limbaugh must continue to seek drug therapy treatment from the doctor who has been treating him for the past 2 1/2 years, Black said in a written statement.

"Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be
convicted and they ought to be sent up."

"What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use, too many whites are getting away with drug sales, too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too."

"It's kind of like sentencing. A lot of people say that we have a heavy sentence for this crime and a light sentence for another crime, and what we ought to do is reduce the heavy sentence so it's more in line with the other. Wrong. In most cases we ought to increase the light sentence and make it compatible with the heavy sentence, and be serious about punishment because we are becoming too tolerant as a society, folks, especially of crime, in too many parts of the country."

Nothing like a plea bargain for the rich and famous.

In other words, Rush is saying what's right for the other guy doesn't need to apply to him. Fancy that...

I was going to post this, but figured that would be beating a dead horse so to speak. Thanks for posting it.

I wonder if this has caused a catharsis of a sort with Limbaugh vis a vis the drug war.

There already is a "beating a dead horse" thread on page one today. More laughs though.

That's my hope. He always sounded soooooo brutal and unyielding, about how drug users were scum, a danger to society, etc. I keep waiting for him to at least admit that it's hard to be addicted to a drug and follow all the applicable laws.

To be fair, Limbaugh's situation is different from that of casual drug users, insofar as he got hooked while taking them legally. But let's hope it has humbled him a little in his condemnation of those that use drugs recreationally and, like him, seem to function normally in society just the same.

He admits he was an addict. I remember when the story broke and he talked about being prescribed oxy for his back problems, developed a tolerance, getting hooked, etc. The one thing that stuck out at the end was "I'm not going to lie, I liked the pills."

Agreed. I don't like the guy, but I don't want to make too much of this. It is fairly rare that proper use of pain meds results in addiction, except in chronic cases, like his, and as you say, it's entirely possible to function normally while taking them.

It's realy interesting to look at what anesthesiologists say about treatment of pain and the results of not doing so, primarily a result of fear-mongering/drug war horseshit.

Nice provocative headline. The truth is so much more mundane. The charge is being dismissed after a period of 'penance'. The SA gets a minor victory and Limbaugh gets out from under mega legal bills.

Creative headline writing though.

I wouldn't call it "creative;" he was charged with "prescription drug fraud."

You're correct; he's not being prosecuted. His lawyer is parsing the definitions of "arrested" on CNN as I type this.

If he remains clear he will have the record expunged. His lawyer says he's been clean for a couple years. He has to go another eighteen months.

Sounds like the attorney did a great job for Rush.

That's good to hear.

Of course Perg. Being charged and having the charge dismissed is the same as 'guilty.' Burn the guilty bastard. *chuckle*

Who said he was guilty?

Waaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiit a minute . . . . hold on there . . . . are you trying to tell me that a political pundit, in this country, is a hypocrite?

My whole world is shattered.

:)

You implied as much.

Regardless, he wins this one. A "Not Guilty" plea with a wrist slap so the SA saves face. He remains top dog on the radio and Air America continues to tank. Anyone that thinks this was a damaging loss is out of touch with reality.

Al Franken. That will be Air America fodder for the next ten years.

Air America will see 2007 only if George Soros coughs up another $10 million or so to keep it afloat.

I think even George knows a loser when he see one. I don't think he's going to spring for it. Not with his own money anyway.

Word is that AA would be history already if Soros hadn't chipped in $8 million or so.

Yep, but he wants 'his' message out. AA isn't getting the job done. It's preaching to an ever diminishing choir.
