Hey,

Anyone here use walking or running to fuel their imagination? I'm just learning to run, and haven't gotten up to a full 30 minutes tho. It's a blast when I do, and I have so many questions... :cathappy:

I've plotted out story ideas in my head while running. I usually go for 20-30 minutes.

A while ago, when I was working on a stageplay, I used to come up with plot twists and dialouge while swimming. I had to force myself to stop, because there was no way for me to take notes and I could never remember them well enough to get home and write them down. It was so very annoying.

I do alot of my thinking of plots and characters while running/jogging.

I have to do like 40-60 minutes of uphill walk/run/jog a day so it gives alot of time to think. I think it works beter on a treadmill than running outside since I can talk to myself scribble and whatnot and not look like they should call the cops on me ;)

I think anything thats repetitive and lets your mind shut off is good for thinking though. Since I can even hop on the computer right afterwards I don't normally need notes.

If you are running, for whatever reason, I have a suggestion. Running may, or may not, help your brain. However, running in unsuitable shoes can and will hurt your feet. Get a good pair of running shoes. You don't need the latest and greatest, hunt the bargain bins for top rated shoes from the last couple of years. Buy good and buy cheap!

Can I add don't forget to replace them! depending on use it might be -often-. That means every 350-550 miles depending :)

Also depending on -what- you are doing is what type of shoes you need.

Bet yes, good shoes VERY important :)

Good point. Even cheap running shoes are WAY better than running in sneakers or even tennis shoes.

I'm a walking/hiking sort. That pace lets my brain wander enough to do thinking. I don't like running and have never really had any useful thought trains running. And in biking, I kind of have to pay attention to the steel monstrosities trying to kill me.

But yeah, a lot of my best ideas and introspections have occured while walking in the middle of the night.

When I get stuck while writing I like to take a break and go for a walk. I figure out where I'm going with the story on my walks. Sometimes I'll walk several miles while I'm thinking and not realize how far I've gone. The other night I walked four miles and had no idea until I had settled my story problem in my mind and turned to go home.

The knees won't take running, but bike riding, sure! Walking is also quite nice....I do my best thinking while walking, much to the dismay of many roommates and my wife who are unnerved when I walk and talk on the phone or stop typing to pace around the room.
